How to read Dune? I heard some of them were written by his son after he passed away, and that they weren't as good as the originals. Is that true? So, how many parts were written by Frank Herbert himself? And in what order do you read them?

Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune are written by frank Herbert in that order and should be read in that order. Dune is a standalone work, if you love it keep reading. God emperor dune is a big change and my favorite of the series. Heretics and chapterhouse frank is getting older but if you still have a boner for it they are worth reading.

His sons books are co-written by a guy who wrote x files book adaptionsso they are very pop sci fi that takes the dune universe and makes them action packed violence adventures instead of the philosophical and world building of frank. He started with prequels which I read as a kid and then "finished" dune because his dad died and still had notes for more books.

I think chapterhouse does close out the series very well so I haven't bothered to read how his son ends it, and I consider myself a big dune fan. I hear his son really fucks it up bad but I can't say so myself cuz haven't read

I only read dune and then messiah. those two wrap up mc's story and I you can stop there.

what I'm told is god-emprah is the best one actually so I might pick up children to get to that one. unfortunatly it's not in the library or the story where I usually buy books but I do have it as a pdf somewhere

Here's the guide I used. I stopped at God Emporor because I don't want to leave things on a cliffhanger.
