I've heard Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is flawed, and modern research invalidates a good portion of it. Is there a modern equivalent that's better?

I want to write a sci-fi religion focus book. The story would be divided into three parts, with each part having a well defined message divided into 10 chapters. The closest examples of books doing this are Dune and the Lord of The Rings... And yet people remember most of those books for the world they created, even Lotr with all his symbolism falls into orks against man and such... Do I really need to sacrifice the world I have created in order to push the message into a higher position?

He's out of fashion but still worth reading. It's not surprising that he has many detractors here as he mainly espouses an atheist existentialism oppossed to Pascal and Kierkegaard, sort of bastardized Husserl's terminology and, unlike Heidegger, he was politically engaged throughout his life.

>I've heard Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is flawed

You can't really trust the critics. Based on their criticisms, you'd think the entire work was about the sack of Rome by Vandals, but that's only part 36 out of 71! Consider reading it. It's much more sophisticated than you'd think.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_The_History_of_the_Decline_and_Fall_of_the_Roman_Empire#Contents

There's no modern analog, but I'd start with "The Tragedy of Empire: From Constantine to the Destruction of Roman Italy". It has a helpful reading guide in the back too.

You should read them, above all, to be stimulated. I think it's fair to say that, nowadays, most people don't really buy any of the arguments put forth in Plato. (People accept /distinctions/ that Plato made, and people accept modern day descendants of his arguments and concepts.) It's one thing to read Plato and just think "That seems wrong" and move on. It's another thing to stop at each juncture and ask yourself: what's wrong here? What am I not buying about Socrates' way of proceeding? Has he already foreseen my complaint and is actually trying to cut it off? Etc. If you read it in this "interactive" way it will be a much livelier experience. Consider reading the Meno, or the Republic.

I am definitely confident with what I suggested earlier then: try as many thing as you can, whether it's for discovering a passion or to find you next job.

Do a list of thing you could try, just for the sake of trying.

Then, create some sort of template/schedule, and put some items of the previous list in it:
want to try painting in the next two month
want to see how a backery goes within the next six month
want to start working out twice a week

etc

Then, divide those goals into sub-task / categories and plan more accurately in a weekly manner:

eg. with the painting (as a passion)
Monday: go found a book about basics of painting
Tuesday: buy some fcking paint and any tools needed
Wednesday: try sketching some shit on a sketchbook bought the day before
Thursday: start painting
Friday: keep painting and don't bitch
etc

Have it planned every saturday before going to bed, or best plan to weeks ahead so you know what you're doing.

eg. with the backery (as a job)
Monday: update your resumes
Tuesday: print them
Wednesday + Thursday: go wandering and hand out resumes
[DON'T DARE find excuses like "I dunno how to do bread" or whatsoever, even if you have to start as a cashier, you fucking will because that's how you learn the job]
Rest of the week + following one: keep handing resumes / have some interview / do research on bakeries

Then you'll surely start the job, even if it's at minimum wage as you said you where doing nothing, it's still a take.
Once on the job, prob as a cashier or handing out some croissants shit, you'll have to show your dedication, show that you're interested in knowing more. A passionate person (as backer are) will show you the 'behind the scen', you'll learn, and know ultimately if you like it.

You're still young as fuck.
Stop finding excuses or just day dreaming saying you don't know what you do. You have to try, and to fail, hard.
But be warned, you better wake up now, or it'll be too late.
Maybe you'll wake up, hoping that "there would be more".

You have to chase the "more" part you're looking for.
Do it, start now with the list.
I'm with you

if reading books is for someone a reason to live does that make that person consoomer? obviously, relying too much on material goods does, but reading, literature in my opinion falls under the meme if it's the ONLY reason, if said person doesn't commit to anything else, just says "books are the reason i didn't kill myself"

Hi /lit/, /out/ here.

I'm going to be embarking on writing some memoirs, reflections, and musings, and I'm going with a storytelling approach rather than simply recounting episodes.

I don't actually read much (not fiction anyway) which in some ways is probably good in that I won't really be mimicking anybody's style, but the downside I really don't have a strong foundation for what constitutes good writing and storytelling. I'm a pretty good oral storyteller and want to capture all that and more in my writing. Any recommendations for books on the topic that won't lead me astray? These are the top hits on Amazon and they all look really good but which do I choose?

Thanks!

I am writing a story set in a world that is Not Earth. Therefore, there was never a France or a Rome, and therefore French and Latin were never invented.
So we reach the problem: I am not autistic enough to want to completely Tolkien my way through a newly invented language, but I am autistic enough to be bothered by what I consider anachronistic words. There are obvious examples like et cetera or ergo or flambé, but from there is gets complex.
Does debris count? What about espionage? Can anything be described using the prefix ex-? Even words like conqueror are Latin.
Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone have any advice doe navigating these waters that can quickly become overwhelming from either side of the argument?

In 1970 that stock’s earnings were 5.20 and in 1969 5.58. In the December quarter of 1970 1.58 against 1969’s 1.56. It’s really more just being active than anything. Having presence that goes along with your product builds your audience. There’s a market for everything you just have to be active in nurturing it. I wouldn’t take that publisher’s deal, it sounds like they just want to take your money.

I read Fear by instead (only took in random sections of Fire&Fury via osmisis). At least Woodward has a long history of chronicling presidencies; it wasn't a book that's very title was taken from a hyperbolic soundbite (i.e. something that the publisher depended on being topical in order for it to sell).

With how divisive Trump is, and the fact that most pundits are blind to systemic issues within the democracy itself (i.e.TDS/seeing Trump as a disease instead of a symptom), I doubt there will be a decent unbiased and penetrating book written on his presidency for at least another 10 - 20 years.

Hi /lit/
I want to read The Illiad, but something tells me that I probably need quite a bit of prerequisite knowledge before being able to enjoy it fully.

For example, I'm not very familiar with ancient greek mythology and I suspect this is something that it at least references.

Are there generally recommended books to read before starting on the illiad and the odyssey?

I have a teleological question based on an example. I am quite new to this. How do you determine the nature of something? For instance, how do you determine whether the nature of an acorn is to become an oaktree in contrast to being food for some animals. The latter would make becoming an oak tree, resulting into more acorns, meaning more food, an accident.

The Illiad is a really good way to learn about greek mythology by itself. Just consider that the greek mythology tradition mostly came with Homer an Hesiod writings and only then came the other poets. So Wikipedia and in-book commentaries should be enough.

By experience. The "nature" of a thing is just what humans are accustomed to perceive in it and by it. There is no such thing as an immovable eternal innate nature of a thing but only the experience of it which may differ. Read Locke and Hume.

A friend of mine recommended me to listen to the Trojan War Podcast prior to reading the Iliad. The dude behind it makes a living retelling the story to high schoolers so he really knows his stuff.

I would 100% recommend it. I am currently halfway through the Iliad, and I can only imagine how clueless I would have been, had I not listened to those episodes. If I recall correctly, the first 11 episodes all cover events that take place before the events in the Iliad, so if you want you can listen up until that point and then pick up Homer's work.

I am sure that there are great books out there that serve the same purpose, but I found it nice to have something to listen to during my walks/runs.

If you were actually autistic and being diagnosed as an adult it would probably come as more of a relief than a worrisome label.

Besides, ASD is overdiagnosed now so you can basically write it off. (Diagnoses are handed out so that parents have a working definition as to why their kid is a selfish undisciplined asshole; the vogue of the label bleeds into overdiagnosing adults).
