Well, they're haikus written by random people on a Kamchatkan fish breeding bulletin board, don't expect them all to be masterpieces.

Why do sonnets only work in 14 verses?

>>18190058
>8/10
what would that rating mean?
can you post a 8/10 haiku by a classical haiku poet, to provide some frame of reference?

>> No.18190190

>>18190178
Maybe the score is to be understood purely within the context of this thread.

>Well, they're haikus written by random people on a Kamchatkan fish breeding bulletin board, don't expect them all to be masterpieces.
I guess, but, and this is taken from wikipedia:
>The best-known Japanese haiku[13] is perhaps Bashō's "old pond":
古池や蛙飛び込む水の音
ふるいけやかわずとびこむみずのおと
furu ike ya kawazu tobikomu mizu no oto
Translated:

old pond
frog leaps in
water's sound

It's... not very creative
>Why do sonnets only work in 14 verses?
You can work alot more with 14 verses than 3

>> No.18190354

>>18190190
Then where are the 10/10s? If the thread is the only thing that provides the frame of reference, they would be expected (assuming normal distribution of the grades).

>>18190225
Well, keep reading haikus, you've read a few itt, you've read the most famous haiku by the most famous haijin in history, spending a few minutes reading a couple other ones won't hurt, no? Try Issa or Shiki.
Haikus are a very visual thing. Sometimes I perceive them as little exercises in experimental film montage.
>You can work alot more with 14 verses than 3
You can work a_lot more with 1000 verses than 14 too. Doesn't mean much, does it? There are great European poets and writers who expressed themselves in mere distichs, or single sentences (aphorisms), and nobody seems to mind.

Maybe a 10 has yet to emerge within the context of this thread. What is to be expected from a 4chan thread serves as a developing model, rather than one calculating from what perceives to be the current best. You understand numerical scores in a far too autistic fashion, considering that it's selection will ultimately be based upon a feeling (no matter how clearly and strongly felt)

>> No.18190394

>>18190354
>Try Issa or Shiki.
I will, thank you anon. Haikus, though I've known of their existence, are still quite new to me.

>> No.18190460

>>18190394
I personally found it best at first to sink into a proper collection, to get into the specific way of "haiku thinking". Afterwards it gets easier to spontaneously read and judge a random haiku. Bashō is actually not as accessible as he might seem, he's much more than Issa and Shiki steeped in Buddhist thought.
Besides, haiku is very consciously constrained (in material, style and emotion), the Far East has more readily understandable and emotional poetry, such as the waka.
