Several times. I hated it when I first read it as a preteen dink but I actually love it nowadays.

I enjoy the world building, the somewhat fleshed out history and mythology.

Is purdy comfee read. My favorite Tolkien stuff next to The Hobbit.

People who view it as "LOTR lore" are really missing the point. The Silmarillion is an artistic work in its own right, an epic of the war of the noldor. It happens to take place in middle earth

Yes, and it's amazing. Don't get me wrong, reading about the geography of Beleriand is boring as hell, but the stories and the prose make it worth it. Hell, the Ainulindale and the story of Turin Turambar alone are worth going through the whole book, but there are great stories peppered throughout.

Advice to people who can't seem to get through it: my first read was a slough. I had to force myself through because it felt like an impenetrable wall of confusing names and geographical locations. My second read was much more enjoyable, like relearning the grammar of a language you studied in high school. My third read, I really was able to appreciate the subtleties and the grandeur of the stories. Basically, just make yourself read it and then read it again.

Feanor was the first Eldar to have developed testosterone in his system.
Valinor was a nanny-state.
The Teleri were slothful and lacked determination.
Vanyar were a bunch of limp-wristed fags who were pampered by the Valar too much.
Only the Noldor who followed Feanor were worth a shit.

At this point in the Silmarillion the reader knows very well just how powerful Morgoth is. They understand that Fingolfin is on a suicidal quest. The text doesn't beat you over the head with it though. It's restrained, almost unwilling to dwell on it. "And Morgoth came." says nothing about the foolishness of challenging not-Satan to single combat, but in not saying anything emphasises the gravity of the situation.

I would add to this that it becomes more readable around halfway through when the narratives focuses more closely on particular people and events rather than the much larger scope of the earlier book. Also the reading is much more enjoyable when you can actually follow who is who by referring to the family trees in the index. Lots of the names sound similar and some characters have multiple names so I think that's where a lot of readers get lost.

>The sons of Hador were Galdor and Gundor; and the sons of Galdor were Húrin and Huor; and the son of Húrin was Túrin the Bane of Glaurung; and the son of Huor was Tuor, father of Eärendil the Blessed. The son of Boromir was Bregor, whose sons were Bregolas and Barahir; and the sons of Bregolas were Baragund and Belegund. The daughter of Baragund was Morwen, the mother of Túrin, and the daughter of Belegund was Rían, the mother of Tuor. But the son of Barahir was Beren One-hand, who won the love of Lúthien Thingol's daughter, and returned from the Dead; from them came Elwing the wife of Eärendil, and all the Kings of Númenor after.
