POST HERE YOUR QUESTIONS THAT DON'T DESERVE THEIR OWN THREAD:
>Books with X theme?
>What am I in for?
>What was his/her problem?
>Books like X?
>Do I need to read X to understand Y?
>other questions I can't think of right now

This is an experiment, /lit/ is complaining lately.
I think this could help the board quality overall.
Direct all questions that in your opinion don't deserve their own thread to here.
Keep this thread open if you like to help fellow anons out with their questions.
Turning this in a general avoids newfags asking those same questions over and over again.
Also, other repetitive posts that don't really need their own thread can be directed here.

Feel free to discuss your thoughts about this becoming a general and maybe improve the template, and save it on our wiki so we could easily copy paste.

the one by Hussain Haddawy. It is based on the Muhsin Mahdi edition. It is extremely readable and thoroughly enjoyable. Translation is clear and concise and offers footnotes on things that may not be well known to the reader. He has two volumes one covering the core stories and one covering some of the most popular stories (like Sinbad, Ala' Al-Din, etc...) which were most likely not part of the original Nights.

I also enjoy both Burton and Lanes translations they each have their own... charm and character that adds a unique experience while reading the Nights. In comparison Lanes is more children friendly as it censored out most of the sexual content which also makes it a little more... condensed. Burton over emphasized the sexual content but as everyone knows... sex sells. Yes, by modern ideals it's pretty racist but in comparison with other stories and writers of the same time period it certainly is no more so than others.

I love that Burton's edition generally comes with some beautiful orientalist images and also comes in some beautifully bound editions including the newer release like this one from Barnes and Nobel. These make for wonderful editions to display on shelves or coffee tables as well as to enjoy for the content.

Is it weird to dislike big books past a certain point? I feel like once you pass the 800-900 page mark books tend to get more and more unwieldy and find they often dig into my hands.
It's somewhat putting me off from grabbing The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition because I'm kind of worried it'll be one of those books that's gets annoying to hold after a while. The hardcover will likely help against digging into the hands but at the same time that's counteracted by the extra weight the book will likely have because of that. I'm instead considering grabbing the 4 book collection & then just grabbing the last two separately but then I feel like it'll look shit on the shelf

that's something that you and I have in common, then. book collections look just fine on the shelf, so don't worry about that. otherwise, if you're not opposed to ebooks, get an e-reader or use the kindle app (or whatever native book app is on your smartphone, really) and read larger books on that. it's a consistent feel, it's much more portable, and it allows you to read in spare moments when you might not've thought to bring a book with you in the first place

I do. it's actually where I read most often, as per my previous posts. the kindle app is a good all-around reader, since it works on all devices. based on your mobile preference (apple or android), the default readers work well also. the only downsides there is that if you ever switch between those two, you can't really take your library with you–excepting, perhaps, going from android to apple. (I think google play books is on apple.) either way, I use play books and kindle both and they work splendidly

Saying someone is bitter sounds more like an insult than saying they're cynical, but I don't know why.

>> No.18005114

>>18004742
Yes. There is not necessarily a negative attitude toward life in general driving cynicism. You may have had some bad experiences that opened your eyes to certain things and choose to point out those negative aspects of an issue or concept, but you don't necessarily harbor negative energy relating to it when you are just cynical. Being bitter about it, however, shows that you are letting the mean old world inside a little too much. It's actually affecting your emotions. Cynicism is just sarcasm in a different form, which does not come from the heart.

When I was on vacation and had slow Internet I read more. I wish I had money to just create the environment for reading and have it in my routine. I don't have any chair or any comfy place, just bed and a bathtub. But lying in bed is uncomfortable after a while

yeah place and routine has been key for me. I mostly read on my patio or take a cheap lawnchair out front or to a park as well as a hammock when the days are really nice. I watch Jeopardy at 2pm then get myself outside with some coffee and read for a few hours before the nightly news while I fix dinner. This span of hours I have no feelings of obligation that they ought be for productivity or that there's somewhere else I should be and unlike the late evening when I feel too drawn towards entertainment to close the day to be bothered reading.

does /lit/ discuss narcissist culture?
i just got sucked into this stuff and i feel like talking about narcissists and explaining your own problems as a result of being in relationships with narcissts (or people who just act like dicks)

everything i read about this makes too much sense to me and explains so much about where i am, i feel like i'm being conned, am i?

what does /lit/ think about narcissists and the current theories about narcissistic behavior? im not sure if my question makes sense but maybe you have some ideas anyway.
