Just finished Ministry for the Future. I thought it had a very strong opening what with all the ideas flowing and ecoterrorism, but by the halfway point it became standard KSR for me and it was a slog to get through. Characters that are dead inside, and explanations to things that are overdone. Overall it was alright, and it gives me an inkling of hope with the climate change situation. Anyone else read it? Sanderson's magic is pretty convulted and awkward to read so far in Stormlight; action scenes are really clunky and minutiae in nature; infact, it feels like I'm reading a text book about metamagic instead of a story at times.

Loved The Fifth Season, just finished reading it and it was great, couldn't put it down and read it in less than a week. My only complaint is the usage of somewhat modern expressions which I found a bit jarring, but it wasn't widespread thankfully. Also didn't understand why people were bothered by the 2nd person in some of the chapters, I guess they never heard about the epistolary genre. I don't know if I would give it a prize but it was definitely a solid book. Wouldn't recommend it here though for the reasons you mentioned and because it was written by a black woman which would probably bother the /pol/acks.

It was part of the charm of her writing for me, plus it fits the tone of the book in my opinion; a lot of the time she's literally seething, the problem is when she explodes and goes into a diatribe sprinkled with modern expressions.
Agreed on her world-building, it was top-notch and very engaging. I'm just going to read all three books in a row, even if they decline in quality. I just want to see the conclusion to the story.

It's really that bad if the protagonist isn't present at all in the final battle? I was working on my story and since there are two main villains of two different factions, the protagonist and her group deal with one of the team, while the more secondary protagonists beat the living shit of the other, but the battle comes after the one of the MC, who has an important role but not the killing blow, what do you think?

The only other work I remember where there are 2 final battles is LOTR. Allied army at the gates of Mordor is one battle, the other is Frodo, Sam and Gollum fighting to throw the ring. One helps the other.
