>over a hundred pages in
>it's just world building and witches
Why do people claim this is good sci-fi?

>> No.17474612

I stopped about halfway through when there's a time jump with the protag gaining super mind powers and he has to ride a worm. I realised it should be exciting but I just didn't give a shit about any of it.

That sounds really gay. I may just drop the book. I'm not real interested in what the kid does even though he is clearly the chosen one

Nothing wrong with that.

If you're not into world building and witches, you may as well ditch the book right now.

I read the first book and loved it, got bored fast in the second one and dropped it. Is the rest any good?

>Is the rest any good?
Second is meh, but short enough, so it's ok.
Third is ridiculous
Fourth is fantastic
Fifth is good
Sixth shows that Herbert was insane by then

A lot of people think Dune Messiah is the weakest one. It's worth trying Children of Dune at least, as that is very different in style from Messiah. Personally I think it's the weakest book of the 6 (far more than Messiah) but that's not the general opinion.

I disliked how over the top cock sucked Paul was by the story. The narration is sure to point how how fucking amazballz he is at every chance and how he btfos everyone at everything
>better at tactics and politics than his dad
>better at truth sense than his mom
>nerves of steel, heart of gold, silver tongue, master of combat and diplomacy, handsome and a natural born leader, chosen one and literal messiah, 500IQ super genius, champion of the people and a truly righteous noble ect ect
Even chapter starts with an excerpt of a princess talking about how fucking epic Paul was. It just wasn't to my taste, I probably would have loved it if I read it when I was 15 or something, but it's just nauseating how the narration feels the need to draw itself out JUST to jerk paul off. Simply too unrelatable. His father was cool with how human he was and the story shits on him by going
>Paul noticed his father's decision and quietly thought of a far better tactical move, but Paul was kind enough to not wound his father's pride.

It's an unfortunate aspect now, but at the point it was written, we hadn't yet millions of unbearable YA heroes/heroines who are perfect and smart in every way.

It's one of the reasons why I like Dune Messiah: a big part of that book is an intentional undermining of how Paul is portrayed in the first book.

>The universe is full of doors.
Considering the context in which it is uttered, and all of the story leading up to that point, this is the best line in all of sci fi

Read the novel so haven't read all 6 books.

Personally thought the novel was really nice. Paul became a bit boring when he became Maud'Dib. However, the people around him is what kept me going they were all very interesting and I liked their dynamic with each other.

TL;DR
Fuck paul just focus on the Fremen

Would have been a more interesting book if Paul died and Leto lived.

That doesn't make it less boring. The main issue is how the narration tackles it—sucking him off nonstop. I know he's Christ the sequel but it could have been more palatable if the dialed it back in the narration or at times when it added nothing to the story

How far are you into the series again? The further you get, the more you will realise that he is doing the opposite pretty much. It is a great series of books, but it IS old and inspired a lot of refinement in the following generations. Personally I loved it, and liked it more the farther I got into the story Paul becomes an absolute BROKEN person and his successor doesnt fare too much better imo

first and second are basically one book, all the character arks end in the second book and they were meant to be published as one.
The third has very big flaws but I wouldn't say it's ridiculous it has some of the best character arks.
Fourth is awesome no argument
Fifth ok
6+ haaaaard pass

World building in sci fi is as important as character building in literature. Do you complain when Dostoyevsky spends a few hundred pages making sure you know his characters?

I swear the people defending this book endlessly are the same people calling Morrowind a masterpiece. Same posting style, same arguments ("that isn't bad, that's actually a good thing but you're too stupid to realise it!"). Dune is a good book but cmon
