That's a big part of it. A 1000 years ago geocentrism was the prevailing model of the universe born partly out of the belief that we are the most important thing around which everything revolves. The discovery that we are a very small part of a incomprehensibly large cosmos casts doubt on our ideas of self-importance, that this was all for the sake of human life.
