>muh chapter 22
for me, it's chapter 46 altough it's very cringe

I always liked the part where the woman is lying unconscious in the flipped over truck and the guy comes along and holds her nose until she suffocates and dies Tbh I think DFW was at his best when he was doing dark, horrific stuff like that, he clearly had a good imagination for it. Infinite Jest has some of the darkest scenes I've read in any book

wonder if that was a sopranos reference

I forget all the section numbers, but I liked everything to do with Leonard Stecyk. But yeah, I think the novella length one about him getting kicked out of the Ivy League for writing other student's essays is overhyped compared to Stecyk.

thinking about it probably not, sopranos season 6 came out in 2007

46 is the one about that cutting woman

why is stecyk so hyped, he was mentioned like twice

46 is good, much better than 22. What do you find to be cringe about it?

the way she talked down to drinion, the way she was reduced to her beauty, it was really condensed typical DFW writing

Was section 46 the Drinion-Rand conversation? Drinion was based.

Stecyk is great because he is very nice to people and tries so hard to get friends, but everyone hates him and feels repulsion towards him. Yet he doesn't let this get him down. He keeps trying. There's something poignant about a kid who organizes a huge birthday party by the skin of his teeth only to have no one show up and not feel down about it. Instead he turns it around and donates all the shit to needy people and good causes.

The only part of this book I really disliked was that kid kissing himself.

Why did you not like that part?

>> No.17436431

Not that guy but it's stupid and literally has nothing to do with any other part of the book. DFW at his worst. That is unless you like reading about how far he can take a concept. I don't get a lot out of that though.

It does make sense because there's a contrast in mindset between him and his father, but he dragged it out too long for sure. It definitely fits in theme wise, it's about a boy who's content with life

>> No.17436956

>>17436431
It does have a connection to other parts, there is a reason the stigmata stuff is mixed in with it.

This for sure. Also the ghoulish aspect of watching a guy repeatedly rehearsing his own reasons for suicide/dissatisfaction with therapy. But it's the most polished expression he managed. Even better than Good Old Neon.
