Empedocles
>According to legend only, Empedocles was a self-styled god who brought about his own death, as dramatized by the English poet Matthew Arnold in “Empedocles on Etna,” by flinging himself into the volcanic crater atop Mount Etna to convince followers of his divinity.

Philipp Mainländer
>Mainländer wrote a book on all of this, Die Philosophie der Erlösung (The Philosophy of Redemption), the source of his above quotes; the day it was published, he used a stack of them as a pedestal on which to hang himself

You all are wrong, it’s drowning. Drowning can be romantic, horrific, silent, violent, just about anything if left up to the imagination. You could fight and panic for breath, or you could recognize what is happening and inhale so that your lungs fill completely and you no longer feel that pain as you sink down. They say it’s actually very calming, if done that way.

Joshua Slocum had a pretty good death. He made a decent living off writing about his seafaring adventures (which were honestly wild at times) and then when the money began to run out and his fame was pretty much faded he set out on a new grand journey and disappeared at sea. The coverage of this event being related to his literary success helped to immortalize his works and it's a very fitting way to go.
