I just finished reading this. What the fuck. It was really good, better than it had any right to be. Does anyone have any secondary material to recommend? I know of Bloom's essay, but that's about it.

I liked Lord of the Flies when I read it in 10th grade, but I haven't read it since. I also liked Frankenstein when I read it 10th grade, but I also haven't read that since

No wonder the kid never learned anything, hard to get feedback when the teacher's handwriting is such dogshit.

>secondary material
Life's too short to read all the essential primary texts, never mind anything else.

If you really want to read around LOTF:

* Read Coral Island (which LOTF sort of parodies. It was much better-known in the 1950s than it is now)

* Find the interview(s) with Golding on Youtube where he talks about LOTF. He mostly debunks some of the nonsense. He explains why he made it all-male, and a few other little things.

* Read some other Golding to get a sense of his overall world-view. Free Fall & Darkness Visible both have episodes set in schools.

What are some other Lotf esque books, kids/teenagers murdering each other with morbid imagery

One of the Sandman comics has a good bit set in a school where some fiendish bullies kill some little kid.

If you want "kids are cruel", Ender's Game might hit the spot.

Saki's world is pretty cruel and the children are cheerfully heartless, but he's usually on their side. Try Sredni Vashtar.
