Kafka has done this best from what I’ve read. Or books that have first hand descriptions of particularly brutal war events, a lot of what is covered on the Jocko Podcast

I'm in a rush to get through it. It felt like it should have been over at the 30% mark. Like a short story he decided to go long on.

I don't believe in magical thinking, but everyone in the book does. I want to finish it, but I can't settle into it. So not cozy.

Heart of Darkness. I live in a shithole, and take the bus to college, some +3 hours looking through the window, staring at the misery and violence surrounding me. The fear of wilderness, of primitiveness, of darkness, I am reminded of those themes. "The Horror... the Horror" echoes inside my head every now and then. So yeah, it's not a comfortable thought at all.

Imagine every character ruminating. Meaningful smells that speak volumes. Superhuman hearing when convenient.

R Scott bakkers book series in the second apocalypse. He is easily the greatest fantasy / fiction writer of all time, and extremely sinister.

My own writing will sometimes have this effect on me. It is as if the text settles into a rictus when you leave it alone and on your return the awful artless posing of death hits. But as no one but you has seen it, the horror is still born. There is a chance, you must reach out with youe hands, the most primitive abortifacent, and wring the neck, butcher the flesh. Then sow the field again.

Otherwise only if what I'm reading is extremely cringeworthy, like a post on /lit/.
