Thing is, Sanderson was hinting at Kaladin fixing them.
Kaladin has that arc in the beginning where he realizes mental illness is a thing, and was learning how to help depressed and insane people, and then it was never brought up again outside that one depressed guy showing up to say Kaladin inspired him.

Brandon is the pasta of the literature world prove me wrong.

I’ve started reading The Black Company after finishing Malazan, after learning Erikson was a big fan. I can see why and can see the similarities. I don’t really understand what’s happening but have been told it gets shit mid way through? Can anyone expand on that?

Also read The New Sun. Severian is pretty cool and it was good but not a lot happened. However I have read that on re reads after finishing the series it’s like an entirely new book with many things reading or being different. How true is that and why?

Because a lot of pointless seeming details early on mean a lot more in light of what you learn towards the end. Wolfe has a habit of giving an answer, but not asking the question for another 200 pages. He does this in most of his stories (scaled to length). Rereading is better than reading Urth of the New Sun, desu, although maybe read it for closure eventually (first half is the worst part of the series, second half is like an average part of the series with a few cool moments).

My guess is that he went with the army, since otherwise he’d likely have been involved in the attempt to take back the fabrial room, but it might also be the case that he realized fighting back against the whole army was useless & not being plugged into the SiblingNet didn’t know how to help Kaladin without immediately getting killed. Urth is not Earth, it's an Earth from a previous or future version of the universe. This is hard to believe, considering how Nessus might be located quite accurately in South America or the Mediterranean thereabouts (there was Nessus in Thrace) and there's a painting with an astronaut on the moon. The only one evidence to the contrary is a Wolfe interview or maybe an essay saying he didn't want to write a second great flood on Earth.
Things to notice on the first book are tiny clues and foreshadowings that mostly make sense after finishing the whole series. A favorite of mine is the pun right in the series title: New Sun/New Son (as in the son of God, even though Wolfe claims Severian is Christ like --as a holy fool-- but not a Christ). The play is confusing as fuck but it tells a mini version of what will happen (can't remember if that's in the first book). In the first two pages, after Severian tells of his perfect memory, he mistakes the names. The oubliette (defined as a dungeon with a trapdoor on top) points right away to the Torturer's Tower being a rocket ship, same with the cityscape. This is made explicit when the Church of the Pelerines flies away (though another explanation is that even though Severian is clueless about things, one tends to think of a ship, when it might have been a large canvas going up from the flames). The visions of Malrubius and Triskele. Severian reviving Triskele not just by nursing it into health. Severian coming back to life after the duel. The defenses inside the cave of the man-apes and inside the gates. How Dorcas, Ouen, the woman in the St Catherine feast might be blood related.

Finished The Curse of Chalion by Bujold. It was a fun adventure if only a little silly at several times, like a fairy tale full of nice people, except it still tried to introduce some grim stuff and explain the magic/Gods, the political motives, etc., which was alright (again, not deep). It got sillier and more tangled towards the end of the book, even though the first part had tried to set down rules and specifics in the realistic behavior regarding manners, modesty, policy, etc. The entanglement was resolved very conveniently (why I found it like a fairy tale), in how plot events fell into place and every character acted predictably. A bunch of good hearted Mary Sues and Gary Stus, kind of, which is what makes Cazaril a nice MC, if only too much of a hero.
I might read the sequel.

Two qualms about the book though. I never figured out what or who the narrator was and why he sounded like that. Some interjections were quite out of place for third person omniscient. "Once upon a time there was a castle, and it was a nice castle, but small, /eh?/". What exactly is the point of those eh's and other winks at the reader?
And another, the god damn names, but this is just my autism. Dy Cazaril. Dy Baocia. Dy Chalion. "Dy" being stolen from the latinate "de" to describe the place of origin or some family line (Miguel DE Cervantes y Saavedra, Marquis DE Sade, D'Alambert, D'Anunzio, etc). In the Middle Ages and well into the 18th c., In Spanish, and French, the preposition is supposed to be omitted. We refer to Cervantes as Cervantes, not as "de Cervantes". Same with Sade. So all those bloated Dy's triggered the fuck out of me, because they clearly referred to a location and only ignorants call Sade "de Sade".

Man, this ended up being excellent. Thanks to the anon who rec'd it a few threads back.
The story is about 14th century France, during the black plague and a religious quest. I could make a great movie.
The angels and the devils were great. The chemistry between the main characters was probably the best I've read in a while. I wished it could've gone on for 200 or 300 pages longer. The loli's character was a great touch.
I didn't like a few things though. The way he styled "thoughts" or inner monologues without reference and just plain italics could've appeared more often and not too evidently a stroke of style. I think he was a little shy in describing medieval life and stayed too close to what's known historically. A bit more descriptiveness could've added more to the story, and made it slightly less generic, but still, the setting's atmosphere felt quite authentic.
If it wasn't for the ending it would've been another grimdark book with a nice party, smaller scale scenes and a few cool monsters, but it was superbly satisfying.

Some people don't like the story past the first three books because the style changes somewhat and the Company travels to a foreign land(maybe they don't like blacks and browns?), but I think the entirety of the series as an arc for the Black Company is a masterpiece. The last book, looking back on all that's happened, is seriously fantastic.

The Helmet of Horror - Victor Pelevin (2005)
This is a book that aside from the intro is entirely dialogue from beginning to end and takes place in a "thread". Yes, potentially a thread similar to the very one that I've posted this in.
The page count is deceptive for this reason as it's around 33k words. I haven't seen the physical version and I wonder how it must look. The page count itself is peculiar for the digital version as well.
The book is metafictional, metatextual, metaphysical, intertextual, self-referential, postmodern and whatever other terms are relevant. It doesn't play nice or fair and trying to understand it may be a misguided, if not futile misunderstanding. If it were to be called performance art, I wouldn't disagree.
I read almost every review on Goodreads and then some reviews elsewhere to see what others thought about it. I wasn't disappointed by the reactions.
This was the 4th book in the Canongate Myth Series "in which ancient myths from various cultures are reimagined and rewritten" and although I haven't read any of the other books, I can't imagine this is what most of the audience thought they would be getting. I suspect that by the time they reached the end they were thinking that they were being pranked and wondered why they had acquired the book, but didn't want to rate it too lowly to seem as if they didn't understand what was going on and to give it the benefit of the doubt. Based on the reviews some took their bafflement to mean it must be quite a superior work while freely admitting they hadn't the slightest idea of anything about it. This makes sense because I doubt the average member intended audience for this would have necessary background to properly engage with this. If this is what I think it is, as described in the later spoilered text, then I certainly can't fault them for feeling tricked.
I'm surprised the publisher allowed this, but that's probably only due to my prior assumptions and not anything specific about the publisher. In that way everyone involved in its writing and publication is complicit in this prank, which is to what it seems to be to me on several levels. A prank on the reader, the critic, the reviewer, and whomever else may be involved.
My personal interpretation of this Rorschach test is that (this may unduly bias how you perceive this work) none of this happens and none of the "characters" are human, maybe they're AI, or something more esoteric, and if they're human they are literally posting in something like a CYOA or /qst/ thread or a pen & paper game. Everything that is presented to the reader is exactly that, text on a screen. If the events do happen and the characters are what they say they are, then maybe it's something like VRCHAT. I'm not willing to believe these are physical people in the physical world.
My intentions and thoughts are best served by not rating this, so it'll remain unrated. Dear Fellow Minotaurs of Labyrinth 4chan, MOO!

I want to read it just because I need to see how horribly rushed and unsatisfying the final part of the trilogy is.
To recap, at the start of book 1 Kvothe's dad is researching songs about ancient magical demons, is brutally murdered in front of him by an ancient immortal hero turned insane and evil by other magic to keep the secret of those demon guys from escaping, Kvothe vows to track him down and get revenge, then spends two books fucking around at wizard school and doing mercenary work making absolutely zero progress on the main hook of the story. Lads, what about a world with portals that take you to other worlds.

Each world has two gates (portals) and they lead to another world.

Every five years the land that the portals take you to shifts and it directs you to a different world.

So for five years you are directed to an icey viking world at one gate, a desert Arab world at the other, then at the end of the five years it shifts and suddenly those portals lead you to a grassy dinosaur land and a marine water world.

Bloody brilliant! So much potential!

Finished the last two books of the second apocalypse series.
Overall a good series. The writing is strong, and bakker has a talent for creating a unique and interesting world. And the way he uses this as a vehicle for his philosophical ideas deserves a praise.

Also, the parallels between this series and malazan are fun. Like Cnaiür felt like a better version of Karsa Orlong.
However, while I enjoyed the conflict and journey of the characters in the first book, Kellhus invalidates these in the rest of the series.

The love triangle between Akka, Esmi and him?
We know Kellhus doesn’t feel anything and Esmi thoughts and feelings are artificially created by Kellhus. She isn’t just manipulated to “love” him and Kellhus doesn’t want to steal her away from Akka. He just calculated that she is useful for him and therefor made it happen.
I liked the dynamic between the whore Esmi and the honorless Akka in the beginning. And I would have loved to read the tragedy about they love falling apart or even getting a “happy ending” with them.

But with kellhus there is no tragedy. Esmi doesn’t have a choice. From a certain perspective, she has less freedom then a slave or a trained dog. Similar things happen to almost every other character. Kellhus turns these characters into mindless tools and we are just wondering what he intends to do with them.
You could argue in a similar fashion for the holy war. Instead of a devasting and murdering tragedy, it turns into a series of random town sackings as a part of Kellhus 10000 year long masterplan.

Turns out I like the Idea of a character like Kellhus. But I don’t like it as a big omnipresent part in the novel.
Not sure if I want to read another four (six?) books of this.

Yeah that's the first book for you. I still wonder if he wrote it that way because otherwise it wouldn't get published. It's very different from the rest of the series, though. It stands alone as this weird one-off adventure that exists just to set up the main plot of the rest of the books, but that setup didn't have to be written the way it was. So it just feels weird when you put it in the context of the entire series.

>It's just Moiraine constantly preaching about how great women are, while taking male slaves.
Yeah, you will see that Moiraine is actually one of the good Aes Sedai, comparatively speaking. In book 1 Aes Sedai are hyped up as these inscrutable, all knowing beings but you quickly find out in successive books that this reputation was deliberately crafted in order to cover up the many, many shortcomings of Aes Sedai.

You should never take anything characters say at face value in this series, the fact you noticed a discrepancy between Moiraine's actions and her words is good, because that happens an awful lot when it comes to Aes Sedai. They are magically compelled to tell the truth but they don't let that stop them from lying via omission and otherwise misleading people. If anything, the oath of truth is just there to make people trust them so they can lie more craftily.

The more Expanse novels I read, the worse opinion I have about Jame S. A. Corey.
Up until the Nemesis Games I used to think that this series was going to be about the protomolecule and uncovering the mystery of the dead alien civilization. Meawnwhile they dedicated fifth and sixth book to some pointless war and in the seventh and eighth it wasn't much better, the main topic from the first books was barely brushed. (Un)fortunately the ninth book is going to be the last one and I wonder what will the authors deliver. Their novels are quite long but on the other hand, I'm afraid the story may be to compressed, if they decide go explain what were those aliens and what killed them.
Right now it looks like they had an interesting idea but didn't know how to develop it.

Fantasy readers have incredibly low standards. This is babby's first "good prose" book for your average fantasy reader. So all it takes is for something that's pretty fucking hit and miss in terms of prose (mostly miss, though a few passages are actually pretty nice), and your average mouthbreather, who thinks a hack like Sanderson is a good writer, will be dumb enough to think this special in terms of prose.

ok, so I've finished the first Endymion book. And yeah, it's not as good as Hyperion.

I've already talked about the weird semi-pedo angle. But the problem that stood out to me near the end was that Raul, the main character, is just fucking boring. Like, his only purpose is just to be the main character. The avatar for the reader, as this strong man in his late 20s who goes on a journey. But nothing about this journey is particularly relevant to him, and he doesn't grow as a character. In fact, her regresses.

In the beginning of the book, Raul is set up as this pretty outstanding guy. He comes from a strong bloodline, which in terms of Hyperion would make him something of a Prince or a Lord. But he lives this humble life of a hunter. He's thoughtful and compassionate, but also strong and quick to act. He wasn't very worldly, but he still had a sharp mind. He was able to read people, and anticipate their follies. By all accounts, he was supposed to be this hero who goes from inexperience and rough around the edges, to something more wise and refined after experiencing the wider world.

However, Raul ends up being this fucking dope for the rest of the journey who only cares about his gun. Every time there's the slightest danger, he's thinking about how to shoot it. And of course there is always a contrivance as to why he can't shoot it. In some cases, it's actively a bad idea to shoot it, but he's still going "muh gun, muh gun". Which is completely counter to what was established in the beginning of the book. Where Raul is actually the victim of a careless, prideful, gun toting idiot. Then by the end of the book, he is that careless, prideful, gun toting idiot.

I've already begun the new book. And only a few chapters in, Raul is still that idiot who speaks before he thinks. And once again, I'm failing to see his importance in anything. He's just the dumb PoV for the reader.

The graph is a bit of a joke since there's almost zero actual salvation in Bakker's universe. The fact that every soul is basically damned by default forms the motor of the entire series.

The Survivor is a really interesting character. The Dûnyain are objectively evil, according to the vision of Mimara's Judging Eye, because they have abandoned all compassion in the name of pure logic. Yet the way this ultra-sheltered autist has suffered after his world was rudely awakened by incursion from the outside, mirrors the way the world of Eärwa itself was invaded by the nihilistic evil of the Ark. The Survivor's struggle to make sense of what has happened, despite his massive powers of analytic comprehension, and his resolution to survive and raise his child, make for a compelling character. I don't know where he'd place in the graph; I mean, all of Bakker's characters are so morally complex it's hard to situate anyone anywhere.

Not a peep on the No-God series yet, but many anons think that the Survivor's Dûnyain son (which they have retardedly dubbed Crabicus or something) will be the hero of the next series of novels.

The graph is kind of a joke since everyone is damned by default. Bakker's universe is predicated on the darkness that comes before. Koringhus might have been close to grasping the Absolute and freeing himself from the World's chains of causality. Or maybe he just lost his damn mind, like Kellhus

Why are you skipping botns and black company?

Like I told the other anon, I don't remember after all this time. The skip lost is a mixed bag. Some books I skipped because their audiobook narrators are awful. Other books I skipped because I just plain didn't like them. I don't remember which book fits in which category anymore.

It would be a shame to miss those two for reasons you don't remember. Also, try Lyonesse -- classic but different, rich and savory.

I'm kind of getting sick of boomer fantasies. But alright, I'll give it a shot.

I might try Lyonesse too. Same author as Dying Earth, huh? I hope he's good.

He's got a vibe, a cadence. When you catch it he's hilarious. When you don't, he's stilted and weird.

Well I hope it comes through in audiobook.
