Bruh. Also sidenote, do americans realize that Africans don't care about Wakanda as much as Black Americans do. Wakanda is supposed to be a haven, a dreamland that unites the blacks because they are not sure which tribes and what culture/religion their ancestors practiced. Africans in Africa know that.

See, that's the thing: much though everyone here feels a strong sense of intellectual arrogance, there are plenty of good, smart people who are liable to get swindled by RPO and RPO-alikes. (Like, I only read that short story he wrote, but is the guy who wrote "The Martian" really any different, except that he preys on space-obsession instead of nerd porn? Is Douglas Adams *any* different - is he not an exact antecedent?) The teacher who recced me RPO was ex-military, he was a great mentor, he really loved reading and even had a pretty respectable lending-library just for his students (way better than the school's shitty YA wasteland). For a lot of the books I'd bring into school he was the only person who I could speak to about. RPO is a PREDATORY book: so many old boomers just love to discover that people still remember War Games and Mad Max and Atari, totally oblivious to the fact that "retro" is an ages-dead trend. So many smart young people, already force-fed Rick and Morty and Marvel and Reddit, are *trained* to think that "I KNOW THAT!" = an outburst worthy of positive feedback. This book is the opposite of literature, it's candy, it's a dopaminergic Skinner box, and it's very hard to resist such things. Particularly when everywhere you go (which, for a lot of people, is the NYT, YouTube, Reddit, and perhaps TV)
that impulse is being reinforced. Particularly if you're not exceptionally sensitive or fully inoculated against nerd shit.

I don't resent or blame the people who get suckered by these books. I truly pity them. And I know full well that if I had a worse upbringing I could easily find myself in their shoes.

Bad art numbs the mind, furthers oblivion. Ernest Cline's book is just short strings of pleasurable references: "ha I know that movie, lol just like x in that show."
High art challenges the mind, Eliot's references connect his poems with the past, further our understanding of human nature. Prufrocks works and days make us think about Hesiod's εργα and ημεραι, both describe aspects of ordinary life. Thus Eliot strengthens memory, hindering Oblivion.

He relies on references a lot less, and more on evoking unique, pathetic, sad emotions shared by boomers. The nostalgia over having everything in life handed to you for free and being able to wonder over life, the universe, and everything, as strict consequence of having nothing interesting enough in your life to define yourself by, no war, no troubled childhood, no particular skill of note to develop. The nostalgia of thirsting after the most fucking averagely pretty woman in existence because you have no fucking idea of what you want and how would you? The nostalgia of being such a pathetic sack of shit you're being jealous of the guy who says he's from another planet in the bar because at least he has SOMETHING going on, even though he's retarded.

I think that the references are a repackaging of the same Greatest Generation-mentality. But the world's organized in Cline's favor. Adams, if nothing else, had to tread new ground in figuring out how to exploit the sad pathetic boomer nostalgia. Now the nostalgia's been transferred to young people who grew up in a cultural environment that repelled them and pushed them into the past, and because millennial-and-unders love quips and memes so much that nostalgia's easily packaged into referential mantras. Cline is just a really efficient way of exploiting it.

Someone please post the author's rant from when it got pulled from the wiki. I need to laugh.

>> No.16862504

I know these books are just meant to be consumed and not thought about, but it bothers me how their concept is people ruining and abandoning the real world to collectively embrace a simulated VRChat existence. The author probably isn't self aware enough to realize how sad and pathetic that is, but Spielberg should have at least hinted at the tragedy among the pop culture references.

From these excerpts of Ready Player Two it seems more like a cash grab. And he's just trying to appease his readers. Uh... what's popular? Uh... Black Panther was big. Lets put in a Wakanada reference. I don't think he actually gives a shit about Black Panther the same way he cares about Back to the Future or ET.

Eliot pushed the reference thing a bit further than it needed to imo. But there are still some key difference
>linguistic ability
Reading Eliot sometimes makes you feel like all of poetry is just an elaborate circlejerk of references. What makes it still worthwhile is Eliot's sheer mastery with sounds, pauses and rythm. Simply put, Eliot is a master writer, Cline just adds references on top of another with no regard for sentence construction.
>referential depth and allusion
Judging from the link in >>16861758 Cline scarcely references any movie before 1973 (only Buck Rogers and a handful of series from the 1960s). It's probably even worse when it come to books. Eliot draws from three millenia of literary tradition in several languages, and sometimes even quotes in French, German and Sanskrit. In Cline references are only here for themselves, in Eliot they echo one another (two things will be referenced in the same sentence because they share some visible or hidden quality) and other, unmentioned reference are also meant to be present in mind.
>playfulness and variation
Eliot doesn't only references and quotes, he distorts, translate and sometime mistranslates, combine, plagiarize, satirize, bring things up or down a register. It's as if he is bending the words of the great works he uses to see how far they can stretch. He really is like a musician of reference.

I should mention that similar qualities can be found in Laforgue, who was a big inspiration for Eliot.

People say if you're good at something never do it for free and he did that in one of the best way possible. If all you can do is consuming products why not sell that again in a form that entertains people? I'm honestly jealous he actually made millions of this. Why didn't I do it myself back then.

Somewhere Ernst Cline has a team of seven interns whose sole job is to make lists of movies, video games, and tv shows from the 80's and 90's. Not books, he doesn't read those. The interns hand Ernst the list. "We need references to minor characters in the following 72 cartoons - no main characters, only the comic relief guys. You put their names, I will fill in the middle with the shitty dialogue, and we'll bank the $3 million advance in a week. And by we I mean me, because I'm the one writing the shitty dialogue."

Two theories, one the author is doing a 5d chess move similar to Duchamp by showing how ugly the world has gotten by creating a clever satire. The other is that the main character is a lazy self-insert and the author himself is going to a therapist, ergo mc goes to the therapist.

I don't get it. The author is trying to show off by referencing things that everyone knows about. The premise of studying the 80s or whatever the fuck in an effort to combat evil is fine as a plot so long as you really get in there and reference shit that bugmen and consoomers will salivate over, but it doesn't even satiate that audience. This guy doesn't seem to do any research beyond the most basic mainstream references. There's not even a good message at the end of the story. It's just however many pages that might as well just have CONSUME written on them in big pastel pink comic sans. I haven't read this horseshit but he DEFINITELY mentions comic sans.
