AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

I want to be the greatest writer of all time. I want to surpass Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and Homer and Melville and maybe even Shakespeare. But I can’t. My writing is high school tier. What do I do bros?

I used to dream that too anon, but it will hardly happen. The world is for those that were born to conquer it, not for those who think they can, even if they are right.

Melville is quite a low threshold if that's any consolation. With enough work, you might surpass him as a writer, but you will never surpass him in terms of influence. Not in your lifetime, and neither in those of your children and grandchildren.
So, with that in mind, know that you must write well not for vainglory, but to make another soul feel less lonely for a while. Your readers are waiting for you, scattered across space and time. And if you keep writing and improving, eventually some people will end up preferring your writing over Tolstoy, Dosto, Homer, and Shakespeare.

Just write every day and read a lot. Don't do it for vainglory, do it for your readers, Anon.

or you know, people who get off their butts and work

Truth is stranger than fiction. When you write based off of your own authentic experiences and feelings you cannot help but create great art. Also worth trying is looking at ways they structure their literature and repurpose it for you own ends. How is their story structured? How do they develop characters? Go through their works with a fine comb. Bad artists immitate, great artists steal as Picasso says.

That is a horribly stupid goal. Your desire is fuelled by ego, not by the love of writing. Not only will you write garbage with that kind of mentality, but writing will be a painful experience every time you try to do it.

Well at least you have the selfawareness to recognize your writing as subpar , so youve got that going for you.

Surpass them in what? What do they even have in common besides being famous, great writers?! If you just want to be famous, there are easier roads. If you love writing, just write.
