Fuck this piece of shit. I can't believe I waited for all these years for him to write this trash. I still can't get it out of my head how bad that last book was. Sure. Prince of Nothing had its issues. But nothing compared to how bad the Aspect-Emperor turned out to be. He wrote thousands of pages that amounted to nothing.

It's alright. The three main plotlines are pretty interesting and build up properly. Kaladin sneaking around the tower trying to keep the entire thing from collapsing was cool. Navani's probably the weakest story thread if you don't really care for the magic system. Way less Shallan this time and she's carried by Adolin.

Felt like this book was mostly a set-up for the fifth, especially with the stuff at the end. I'm looking forward to Szeth and Kaladin's uncomfortable road trip to Shinovar.

I think it follows Oathbringers plot structure too much.
Also I wish certain events were moved around or shortened. Kaladin's part confined to interludes and he was stuck in that Radiant coma and not being Die Hard man, Teft dying sooner so Kaladin can actually have his revelation over a period of chapters instead of in a single one, not as much fucking science time between Dalinar's wife and the Parshwoman. And more Adolin and his sword wife. Moash being featured in more than three chapters. And the biggest gripe is why the fuck the two Heralds Dalinar and co. have weren't featured more.
I think Sanderson's pacing is fucked now because everyone expects his SA books to be at least a thousand pages minimum and so he writes too much fluff to meet those expectations, when this one could have easily been five hundred or so if a lot of the chaff were removed.

>Dark One Book 1 is the first book in a series of graphic novel written by Brandon Sanderson and adapted into its format by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with artwork by Nathan Gooden and Kurt Michael Russell.[1] The story takes places both on Earth and in an alternate world called Mirandus, with the two worlds influencing each other, even though only some in each are aware of the other. Though the protagonist, Paul Tanasin, is from Earth, there are prophecies of him in Mirandus -- prophecies claiming that he will be their destroyer, the Dark One.

Regardless, Malazan is only "hard" if you have ADHD or otherwise fail to engage with what you read and remember details. Because what it does is throw a lot of details at you without any context at first. And it never really slows down, so you either remember stuff or you get lost later. As I said, not a problem if you pay attention and think about what you're reading, only a problem if you're a distracted reader or somebody just looking for something quick to blitz through.

The novels are usually meant to be self-contained as far as the setting is concerned, so long as you don't jump into a series midway through.
Gaunt's Ghosts is often recommended as an introduction, it follows an Imperial Guard regiment, the first and only regiment from planet lost to the forces of Chaos immediately after their inauguration. The characters are cliched but likable, try First and Only and see if you like it.

>Yes, there is a lot of Judeo-Christian thinking in his writing. Though I have to say that Mormon theology and how it relates to henotheism is definitely evident. Ruin, Preservation, and eventually Harmony are an excellent examples of how his writing was influenced by mormonism. Mormon's believe that as children of God, they can become gods themselves. Sazed becoming Harmony (God) is a prime example. Once you dive into the cosmere, the parallels become even more interesting.
That's it, it's time to embrace the church of LDS and become a great fiction writer.

Then you'll probably like the second book more, as it focuses much more on the military side of things. The magic does play a role in it, but more along the lines of a force multiplier. Taniel spends half the second book effectively forcing the kez Priviledged to keep their heads down so the actual soldiers can do the soldier things without magic playing a role in the battle either way.

Maybe he did saw Taravangian ascending to take Odium's place but found that he was powerless to stop it, so he apologized because he probably consider ascending into a god of boundless hate when all you really want is to protect your people to be a terrible fate.

In any case, if Renarin knows then he must have a pretty fucking good reason to not tell Dalinar Odium's vessel has changed. Considering the epilogue is about Odium making sure Wit does not suspect the switcheroo it's fair to assume he will remain hidden from Dalinar until the day of the duel.

The MC gets shit done. It has cheesey harem shit, but the MC is competent. He stays true to his character from book one onwards. Many books I read the protagonist started acted different because the author wanted something to happen that couldn't if he kept the character straight. He also uses what little he has to make himself powerful. You ever read a book and saw the protag has some power that could be used another way and the author never utilizes it? Doesn't happen here. This is the most fun I had with fantasy in years. I reread the damn books at least 8 times each, I've been reading for 20 years and I never reread a book like I did Daniel Black.

If you like your protagonist working for their bread and doing a competent job of it, I recommend Daniel Black.

Tau Zero - Poul Anderson (1970)

I read because of a deal made on a whim, otherwise I probably wouldn't have done so. I don't have any particular interest in the author despite many others classifying more than a few of his works as classics.
This novel was based on his 1967 short story "To Outlive Eternity". I haven't read that story. Did this need to be a novel? No, I don't think so, but so go opinions.
I assume that time dilation used in this way in 1970 was still a fresh idea and worthy of standing on its alone, but unfortunately, to me at least, today time dilation in this sort of story is routine, expected even. The magical becomes the mundane over time. There's no escaping the treadmill it would seem, hedonic or otherwise. It's a hard sf story, where the idea is almost everything, though I was surprised that there was some attempt at character development and relationships. It was unexpectedly funny for me. I laughed out loud multiple times. This is probably an atypical reaction.
Four years later The Forever War would be released and go on to be much more successful in every way with a similar core idea. Forty four years later Interstellar would be released and have a similar idea. What these three also have in common is that I didn't particularly enjoy any of them. At least Tau Zero made me laugh, if nothing else.

>It's a hard sf story, where the idea is almost everything, though I was surprised that there was some attempt at character development and relationships.
Poul is a character writer more than a hard SF writer, he's just as functional in space opera or fantasy (and his fantasy is terrific since he actually knows medieval history). I didn't read Tau Zero as a time dilation story as much as a lifeboat story, with all the cool bits about developing their optics so they could actually see what they were passing and how that's used to stave off depression and mutiny.
The cucking is also a Poul Anderson thing.

Anathem is probably his best book, but try to go into it without reading the back cover because it spoils the main twist that isn't revealed until 400 pages in. I think it's fantastic, although it does jerk itself off a bit over how many famous greek philosophers concepts it can introduce with different names. Reamde's also really great, aside from my two main gripes of 1) it completely switching genre halfway through and 2) taking huge liberties with how MMOs work. Cryptonomicon's alright. Zodiac's probably his most down to earth book but it hasn't aged well at all. SevenEves is pretty bad and is clearly two separate stories jammed into one and suffers for it. The Diamond Age is weird as fuck, and while it's been a while since I read it I remember thinking it was pretty bad. I do remember that the only connection it has to Snow Crash is that YT shows up near the end as an old woman in a cameo and that's about it, they could take place in totally different worlds

Reamde was clearly written by a man who has never played a single MMO in his life. Stephenson also doesn't understand how computers work since the game-world supposedly generated the same kind of detail in the terrain that Dwarf Fortress has, with fully 3-D graphics, in an MMO.
Ain't no machine that can run that bro

>> No.16852132

>>16852086
Also the MMO apparently only has a single server despite it explicitly being the second-most popular one in the world behind WoW, and RMT is not only allowed but actively encouraged to purchase in-game items yet people apparently still play what would clearly be a PTW piece of trash, and the mods can apparently re-shape terrain in real time in-game even as people are trying to play around it.
It felt like something written by someone who had researched MMOs, but never actually played one. That's Stephenson's thing, really - he includes a bunch of extremely detailed real-world minutiae in his novels about the various concepts (MMOs in Reamde, the environment and Boston traffic in Zodiac, the moooooon and genetics in SevenEves, philosophy in Anathem [although in Anathem mistakes are more easily excused because it's a fantasy setting and not attempting to portray something real) that are just accurate enough to be convincing to the layman, but have huge flaws if you have more than a passing familiarity with the real thing. For another example, in Reamde the characters have to get from Vancouver, Canada to the US and he names all three of the real-world border crossing points correctly but gets their locations wrong.

Reamde is explicitly set in 2011. It isn't set in the future. I wouldn't even say it's science fiction, just an action/thriller novel that happens to involve an MMO, and even the MMO bit gets dropped almost completely halfway through to switch to a plot ripped straight from a Tom Clancy book.

If you can name a play where the protagonist is about to be defeated but says magical words about protecting his friends and then gets a super powerup that makes him glow and fly and lets him beat up the enemies with upgraded magic powers then let me know, I'll watch it.

It’s clear that there will just be a minor timeskip, which is why the terms with Odium were conveniently changed from "Odium fucks off for 80 gorillon years past the deaths of every character" to "Odium retreats to a couple kingdoms and totally doesn’t get around the deal in a few years".

I've stopped reading intros. I've happened upon one that basically spoiled the entire book, was mad as fuck.
Why would somebody do that?

I think Odium is going to lose because there would have been no need to so conveniently change the terms if Dalinar was always going to lose anyways. Plus, it’s still Brandon, who really doesn’t do downer endings even when things are otherwise very grim. I don’t see evil Dalinar happening.

Dalinar doesn't need to be evil, he just needs to do what Odium wants. I doubt Taravangian (or even Sanderson) is the kind to tell him to go stomp on a dozen babies for the evulz.
