There's nothing inherently wrong with modern fiction. What IS wrong is the tendency for garbage to be praised as a result of the degradation of art. At the very least, we can depend on historical classics more than we can on the highly politicized books that get so much praise today. And as Harold Bloom and many others before him have said, works which have lasted hundreds of years have a canonical worth that contemporary works cannot have. The proof of concept has been made for those works, while you don't know if the book in 2020 will even be remembered in 2030, 2040, or 2050. And chances are, the great works of today have been influenced by the great canonical works of the past, so those works of the past are worth reading for their high quality and for their influence on subsequent works.
