What canonical works give you mental resilience and spiritual strength?

>> No.16723641

Any canonical work, for merely being in the presence of beauty or greatness will give you strength to face the next day.

Start with the Greeks. And stay with the Greeks.

But notice that you shouldn't only read them, but practice their philosophy.
I think something like "The Discourses of Epictetus" is a nice book, but I would recommend you to read "The Inner Citadel" before reading it.

After that, you can read more Greeks. Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, even Epicurus all write interesting things.

Thoughts?
>Discourses of Epictetus => Cicero's Ethics treatises => Seneca's of a Happy Life => Plato's Collection => The Inner Citadel by Pierre Hadot => Meditations

I like The Inner Citadel first, but your list is good too. I think Cicero is underrated.
And in the end, I would put The Enneads too.

I like The Inner Citadel first, but I liked your list too. Maybe The Inner Citadel could be used to help polish people after reading the others.

I liked Cicero in the list too. Maybe in the quick read list, have the Tusculan Disputations or one of his other books...

"This crocodile then suddenly grabbed the baby elephant and made an attempted kill - it was hoping for a nice lunch. The herd went crazy, trampling and trumpeting, and scared off the crocodile. I've heard this is very rare. Crocodiles don't normally try to catch elephants."

Montaigne's Essays
Marcus Aurelius -- Meditations
Augustine -- Confessions
William Cowper's poems

David Goggins, Marcus Aurelius, Bernard Cornwell books (sharpe especially) and just historical accounts of great men. Most authors never accomplished anything of note, so history books are a better place to look to than general literature
