Are these any good bros?
My dad got me Eldest when I was a kid but I couldn't read it at all

No. The author doesn’t even want you to read them

Well there are a lot of weird fantasy terms and plot points from Eragon
One of the reasons I couldn't read it at 9 was because Paolini includes a dictionary at the back with Elvish to English translations and it was exhausting having to flip back and forth

>Elvish
Literally stolen from LOTR. Read LOTR first and forget about this burger fanfiction.

I liked the first two when I was a young lad but I couldn't read much of the third book, it felt poorly written. Idk if it was worse or I had just outgrown it.

Also I always thought calling it the "Inheritance Cycle" instead of "series" or "tetralogy" was really pseudy

I think you should read Eragon and Eldest and then tell your Dad that you finally got round to reading it and you can ask him about fantasy books or whatever.

Y'know anon, your Dad likely got that for you because he knew you liked books and he went to the bookshop and asked the person working there for a recommendation. I mean to get across to you that it doesn't matter if the book is trash, and you really can ask your Dad if he has read LotR, assuming he is still alive.

That sounds like a funny story. Care to explain?

>> No.16644536

Cool for YA but it's YA shit and literally a horrible rip of LOTR and starwars mashed together.

Plus the main character is a total bitch that faints, passes out, KOd, and captured every 12 pages.

I liked Eragon even if it was a little derivative of Star Wars. Eldest was boring as fuck and I struggled a lot with it. Brisingr wasn't bad and tried to steer the series into a less Star Wars direction and the Ra Zac were cool I guess. I didn't bother reading Inheritance.

He started writing them when he was 16 and it shows. There's better genre fiction out there but highlights include the protagonist never getting laid, being brain attached to his dragon while she's getting fucked, turning the bad guy into a nuke with the power of understanding, and starting the Olympics. Also one of my favourite bad similes: "with the gracefulness of a weasel".

I've read Eragon and Eldest.

It's pretty exceptional material for a young man to produce. He obviously had a very good homeschooling education, and his parents likely took some editorial liberties. That being said, I found the story to be extremely captivating when I read it in my early high-school years.

IMO the magic system in this book is the most brilliant and well conceived magic systems in the genre of fantasy, even better than Tolkien and GRRM. It borders on Religion, as magic should, and there are many passages that really touch on some transcendental motifs. At times it does have the air of adolescent sophistry about it, but knowing the author's age this is not so hard to forgive for the sake of the general story and world immersion that the author successfully creates. the 3 monoliths of fantasy are Tolkien, GRRM, and Paolini IMO. Definitely worth the read, even if you don't like it.

Paolini has some great interviews and material available online which I've found to be pretty insightful.

This was the best part, I feel like Chris probably wrote Eragon to be this super OP dragon-lord with no weaknesses or flaws, and his parents ended up playing dungeon master putting constraints on the character. Chris probs had to write his way out of all those captive scenarios. I thought that all of these problems made for excellent story telling, I was more willing to believe in the magic system after seeing it's adverse effects on the characters.

Yes, they are, but the ending is very disappointing.

I read Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr when I was a younger lad. I enjoyed them. Sort of feel like I failed myself not reading the final book, and it's been so long now that I won't remember anything from the previous books if I try to read it now anyway.

Eragon honestly was good for a 16yo. The last book is cool because there's like 100 pages in the end of the good guys squabbling over carving up the evil King's empire

Great. Another series to add to the list.

>> No.16650749

Trying to remember. Eragon had the true name and can't lie aspects, right? It focused more on a sort of physics system, while Earthsea was much more focused on the Daoist inspired spirituality of the magic, rather than detailed rules.

There were some creative parts of Eragon. The magic required the same physical energy it would take to do something normally. So he learnt that it's better to sever a nerve in the brain to kill an enemy, rather than shooting fire at them. The rebels raised funds by using magic to mass produce high quality cloth (or something like that), which was time consuming but not physically tiring.

Overall though Eragon is mediocre and derivative. Read Earthsea instead for good young adult fantasy.

>willing to believe in the magic system after seeing it's adverse effects on the characters

100% agree but paolini is retarded.
He could've gone full autismo and made a shitload of history/lore books with all the great content he had and I would've eaten it up. The land seemed so ancient and weird shit all over the place.
But as the consensus is , the main plot is shit and eragon is a faggot

Roran
>simple farmer
>defends village and breaks his arm
>fuck swords and shields, give me a fuck huge hammer and still rekk shit with other hand
>goes full blown odyssey and leads village to safety
>got some cthulhu type shit chasing you?
>just don't give a fuck and keep eluding, WITH AN ENTIRE VILLAGE
>did I mention magics fucking gay?
>jump into a huge battle and sneak up on magic bald cunts and crush skulls
>doesn't know what a dragon rider is
>doesn't care
gg no re
