16614926 No.16614926 [Reply] [Original]

>Indeed, the modern public library has become little more than an internet café and homeless shelter. Libraries are like old port cities — they tend to attract the strays. Seventy-five percent of the patrons who walked through the entrance were there to use the computers, not to check books out. There were white families who came to participate in children’s activities and functions, but my side of the library was almost wholly filled with the black and brown dregs of society who washed up onto our front steps every morning with no goals in life, save lounging.

It is a shame. I have worked in several university libraries and anyone will tell you that it's a shadow of its former self. Even the rate of book checkouts is a fraction of what it was before the internet because everyone uses online sources now. The kids use online articles and don't do research unless they absolutely have to. People only come for the free wifi. All the classic librarians are dead, or they're pushing 60 or 70 and being strongly forced to retire by the new management, which is all "Information Science" degree people who don't know or care at all about books or being a librarian.

I think they should stop trying to attract people and keep up with the times. Stick to being about books and research. Be fine with attracting only the rare few who still care about reading. Problem with that is, they need to justify their existence to the government by showing public engagement. So it's a downward spiral: every year they pander more to the plebs, they scrape by just enough public interest to get their budget renewed, but each year it's less and less.

He's absolutely god-damned right though. I might actually be able to enjoy my downtown branch, the only one with anything worth borrowing, were it not for nigs and homeless. On a prior visit some nigger started nigging out, wailing at the wicked world in the highly acoustic main lobby which carries sound throughout a very large building the size of a city block. Scuffling began and it then occurred to me to ensure that I had a line of flight; a white librarian quickly walked from secure locked area to another.

I was always impressed that libraries were early adopters of internet access realizing the role they play in acting as repositories for information (high speed "books").

I dunno. Make computer access more byzantine and less user friendly. In the old days of the 90s, these things required a high IQ to get working and thus were natural pleb filters. Now they are designed so any moron from a zoomer niglet to a death's door boomer can punch into it.
add more hoops till it becomes either too much of a hassle or too unintelligible to access.
that's the cynical route.

pragmatically this could be done by adding layers and layers of unnecessary "security" and encryption e.g. 3-layer protection (password, phone, email) to access a website; forcing people to have long impossible to remember passwords (!M8@4a-O/zZ!^2&aa419), etc.
In the end, a true seeker of wisdom will put up with the hassle and overcome the hoops, while a high-time preference plebeian hedonist will easily get frustrated and "ain't gunna put up wit dis sheeeiittt"

To elaborate, I'm insinuating that the true author, by assuming a female pseudonym, means to invoke racial sympathy by the well-known tactic of juxtaposing white girlhood (equivalent to white victimhood) with black masculinity, whereas a white male author would be seen for what he is (or at least what he has been construed to be): paranoid. At the library, I learned to cultivate a chilly, ice-blonde persona around black men in order to discourage conversation or clumsy pick-up attempts. This was only partially successful. Monday nights I stayed until closing time, which was 9 PM. On one occasion, toward the end of my shift, a teenage black kid approached me looking for a book on Abraham Lincoln in order to write a term paper. “Fine,” I said, and showed him the appropriate history section. Nothing that I pointed out seemed to please him, because all of the books were “too long.” Eventually, I said what amounted to, “well, you’re either going to have to read something, or you’ll have to ditch the assignment,” then walked off. As I was shelving the last of the books for the evening, I had to wade past him down a row of J. D. Robb mysteries. As I lifted myself up on tiptoes to reach the top shelf, I felt a hand creep up my leg...."

THIS is the problem.

Don't fucking beat around the bush. Homeless people who behave poorly or smell bad should be immediately banned from the library. They are legitimately the only problem with the library system.

I lived in San Francisco close to the public library. It was gigantic, beautiful architecture, tons of books, state of the art. And it was for the most part unusable. You had to walk through heroin needles and junkies shooting up heroin outside the front steps to get into the library. You would never be able to use the bathroom, it was too disgusting. The atmosphere was the opposite of what a library should be (anxious rather than relaxing). It smelled bad. The problem is 100% vagrants and nothing else.

I wound up buying a membership to an old Mechanic's Institute private library. $100 for me to read, study, and do things on the computer in quiet. Well worth it.

There's nothing wrong with having a third space where people can sit and read or work on their computer. This is a good thing. There aren't many of these left in America. Other countries have these kinds of third spaces too. Just kick out the fucking vagrants.

I hate that "solve the homelessness problem" and "kill the niggers" are basically the same solution, just /pol/fags have dehumanized the poor so much they just like to ideate on murder. I still see no reason to have pride in your race when you can't even feed and clothe everyone in your country. To solve the library problem you have to solve systemic issues that cause your libraries to become shit. If the homeless had a home they wouldn't hang out at a library. If the poor could afford cellphones they wouldn't need the computers. These are such simple and obvious things, yet this thread is 93 posts about purifying the race and killing everyone off. Don't you realize that killing everyone now doesn't solve the problem? That there will be more poor people if you just get rid of the current poor people without changing the reasons they are poor?

My city reduced homelessness by double digit percentages by providing temporary housing, rehabilitation, and job training programs. It didn't completely eliminate it because mental health and drug problems are much harder to take care of in such a short time, but it is possible. There are programs out there that do, in fact, lessen the impact. You are literally correct in your ironic list of totally DUNKING on me. Unironically, Yes.

Well nobody reads anymore. You can't save the libraries without fixing this. I imagine those who do read probably do use the library a similar amount as they used to. Most people are not /lit autists who pirate books and shun used.

Personally the only way I'd go to a library is if it offered some kind of experience around reading that a home book was worse than. Like a roaring hearth, super comfy reading chairs, free coffee, whatever. Incentivize people to come and kick them out if they aren't reading.

What city? (this might go back to demographics: because unfortunately, and call me a /pol/tard, but certain groups are more predisposed to drug and mental health issues). Also my list wasn't ironic, it was listing the approaches and trying to make you aware of how costly and ineffectual they are for the complex issues that cause homelessness. I think instead of letting libraries fester until the city can somehow afford and implement all these things to reduce homelessness, libraries should just require signing up for a membership which would require an address. And in the mean time the homeless can actually use all the shelters that don't let them do drugs in. If you think a normal urban city can afford that list let alone think it's worth prioritize for the sake of fucking libraries, my original assessment of your intellect was correct.

If you're trying to use a library, the solution to this is to either use a university library, a private (paid subscription) library, or move to a small town with considerably fewer homeless people.

I've lived near the main library in two cities I've lived in in recent years, and never really wanted to hang out for long in either due to the homeless people. (One of these was San Francisco, the central library of which must have the portal to hell located in it somewhere. I think multiple people died in there during the two years I lived nearby.)

One solution cities could consider is to get rid of physical libraries and instead use that money to fund direct book mail service for residents. Instead of going to a library, you would use an online service to reserve a book and the city would send it to you for free with instructions regarding how you return it.

I still see no reason to have pride in your race when you can't even feed and clothe everyone in your country. To solve the library problem you have to solve systemic issues that cause your libraries to become shit.
I agree. Homeless people of all races should be gotten rid of. It's wrong to see this social rot as a race problem, and trying to lump in homeless with other groups of people like blacks or gays is just going to organize them into a broad coalition when I think everybody can agree that the homeless problem needs """solved""".
>If the homeless had a home they wouldn't hang out at a library.
No they would just hang out around whatever housing project they're being shoved into, robbing shit and panhandling so they can by drugs. Solutions like this turn towns and cities into ghettos, because you're creating a class of dependents and providing them with free food and housing and often drugs as well just so it can make your bleeding heart feel warm and fuzzy.
>If the poor could afford cellphones they wouldn't need the computers.
The poor can afford cellphones. Even people living in corrupt 3rd world countries and war zones have cellphones these days. What you're proposing is that the homeless should be able to afford computers, so they don't use the ones in the library. How do you pay for this?
>These are such simple and obvious things, yet this thread is 93 posts about purifying the race and killing everyone off.
It's a much more nuanced opinion than you give credit to
>Don't you realize that killing everyone now doesn't solve the problem? That there will be more poor people if you just get rid of the current poor people without changing the reasons they are poor?
Nobody is against poor people, people don't like the whiny drug addicted retards who hang around public spaces making everything shitty for everyone else. If those people were killed off, or at least we stopped giving them free stuff just for being poor, then they would either starve to death on their own or get their shit together somewhat.

The problem is bleeding hearts like you that just enable the problem because you think somehow the government can fix these people's lives and all you need to do is throw enough money and sincerity at it so you can feed your savior complex.

I think you're right overall. As a 'bleeding heart' myself who has spent a decent amount of time working in homeless shelters and programs, I have come to realize that the solutions is not as simple as 'more resources.' There's often something seriously wrong with a lot of our homeless population (here in the States at least) that is deeper than simple poverty and dispossession. That being said, I do think that the utter disdain many people have towards the homeless doesn't help at all, nor does the very real shortfalls of our gutted social support systems and resources. I cant speak to anywhere but my city really, but we often did really truly run short of beds for people and case workers were very overworked. It's a problem that I hate since I really cannot see a real meaningful solution anytime soon, so all one can do is keep their head down and try to help out in small ways.

>That being said, I do think that the utter disdain many people have towards the homeless doesn't help at all
In most cases this is learned behavior, since a lot of homeless will abuse any display of kindness or generosity and take a mile when given an inch. Talk to them, and you'll get a half hour sob story about why you should give them money. Give them money and they buy drugs. Invite them into your house and they rob you. A community builds a resource shelter, and people from out of town come and start robbing shops and pissing in public parks around the area.
The first step towards a real, meaningful, final solution to our homeless problem is to stop treating them as passive victims. The stigma around homelessness is entirely the fault of the homeless themselves create by being such parasitic pieces of shit.
You should read Tocqueville's Memoir on Pauperism, which deals elegantly with the subject.
http://civitas.org.uk/pdf/Tocqueville_rr2.pdf
He distinguishes between private charity and public charity. Private charity comes with stipulations, is handled on a case by case basis, and involves a feeling of mutual obligation and generosity. Public charity is often handed out as entitlements to the poor and miserable qua their poverty and misery. This only encourages the naturally lazy, selfish, and parasitical to live lives of dependency, and to even see themselves as entitled to special treatment and public resources. Whats worse, it groups them all together into ghettos, where they can be politically organized, where they encourage and reinforce their lifestyle and addictions, and where they can be targeted by drug dealers and other predatory people.
The fact is, when you turn somebody out on the street you're doing them a favour. Spending a night in the cold is a far better motivator for someone to get their life together than therapy sessions and job counseling.

>If the homeless had a home they wouldn't hang out at a library. If the poor could afford cellphones they wouldn't need the computers.
If I had a private library I wouldn't need a public one. Perhaps the government should give me a one time payment of $20,000 so I can furnish myself a private study, permanently solving the problem of homeless people in the library once and for all, and at less cost than what it takes merely to feed a homeless for a year. Unlike them I actually pay taxes, so this seems like the most reasonable solution.

I dont think you are wrong in many cases, and I appreciate the recommendation. I will read it this week. However, I still do sometimes found myself really disgusted by the way I have heard some people privately discuss the homeless. It is one thing to be a little spooked or wary of giving out handouts, but another to have absolutely no empathy whatsoever. The homeless or more or less a siloed off, disposable population in my city and it really does sadden me to meet people who dont even find it really troubling at all.

In socialist countries homeless people were forced into housing, educated, and made productive members of society. After a decade or so of socialism homelessness disappears entirely and the anti-social behaviors of the homeless disappear with it.

Instead of jerking yourself off about empathy, try having some empathy for the quiet masses who are tired of being taken advantage of by these cockroaches.

When I meet people like you my first thought is that you don't really care about homeless, or anybody, it's just a way to feel good about yourself. The reason people don't empathize with the homeless is that 1. they have their own life issues to face, their own homes to pay for, their own stomachs to feed; and 2. every attempt at "empathy" inevitably leads to giving the homeless more resources to take advantage of, when most of these people are either incurably mentally ill or simply petty criminal drug addicts who would rather play victim than hold down a job.

In socialist countries lots of homeless were also taken into the woods and killed by secret police, locked in psychiatric hospitals for the duration of their life, or sent to gulag to be worked to death for the glory of the state.
I don't disagree about it's effectiveness though.

Forcing people to live in dignity is not the same as killing people in the woods and locking them up in psychiatric institutions. Most homeless after being forced into housing, education, and work would be reintegrated into society within months.

Saying “anti-social behaviour” isn’t evil, it just means behaviours that are bad for society.

Listen you shit I've been homeless myself and live in an area of distributed poverty, drug abuse, rural stagnation, and decline. Many people I grew up with are either homeless or drug addicted dependents living in the system.

Every program that gets established to "fix" the homeless problem here, either through safe injection sites, public housing, womans shelters, soup kitchens, or anything else inevitably leads to a new mass migration of homeless parasites who realize they can come to this town and get things for free.

In the last five years alone, it's gone from a safe and lazy community to a place where you can't go outside without people panhandling, and where break-ins and petty crime is a common occurrence. In the last month I've had two home invasions, and half the times I go out walking at night I'll see some bum shining their flashlight into shop windows and parked cars looking for stuff to rob.

And it's hard not to notice that all the people working at homeless shelters are inevitably college educated, well to do white kids, who live in comfortable houses in the suburbs and attend political rallies with other affluent yuppies in their free time. On top of gathering all the scumbags into one ghetto, they also politically organize them into a voting block, which ends up pushing for more dysgenic policies.

It's easy to bitch about being "disgusted" by people's "lack of empathy" when you are economically and socially segregated from the people you are "helping". Especially when you've spent much of your life in academic institutions with private security forces and gated ivory towers to ensure you never have to interact with a bum in any context which doesn't resemble a zoo.

Part of me is convinced this is all an effort to transform my sleepy town into a ghetto that larger cities can use to siphon off their own excess homeless.

You want to solve the problem? I can give you a list of addresses that the drug dealers in my town operate from. Put a bullet in their heads or lynch them in the streets and suddenly these parasitic homeless losers won't be able to get high anymore. That alone would solve 80% of their problems, and 100% of the crime around here. Yet the only solutions I ever hear presented is that the government should just take more money from 'evil corporations' and give it to these poor helpless homeless people who only exist as passive victims who enable you to feel good about yourself.

If you give such a shit, then pick one single homeless person and personally make an effort to involve yourself in that person's life. Invite that person into your house, give them food and a warm bed, and try to help them find a job. Watch them rob you blind, spend it all on drugs, and end up back on the streets a week later. But at least then you can say you actually tried, instead of just adding another self gratifying "experience" to your resume.

Without reading any of the thread I'll say that libraries serve two purposes:

1) Academic learning (this is the primary point of having a library). They exist to teach us and record information. This isn't just for university students, but for children getting into reading and adults trying to learn something new. Libraries should serve as community hubs that gather people together for interest groups and workshops on top of offering books.

2) Entertainment (this is much less important). The only people who read for entertainment are the kind of people who watch marvel movies for entertainment. They're horny old women or walking midlife crises with a fetish for military fiction and alternate history. If you're in a big city or university, congratulations. Small town libraries are polluted with the literary effluvia built to cater to these geriatric eloi.

In the past, wealthy industrialists bequeathed fortunes to libraries as they felt an educated populace would better advance the causes of men. Today nobody would suffer that illusion; the populace is clearly retarded, and every scrap of knowledge thrown to their chained pit is one that strengthens their hunger for yourself. The billionaires of today will fund not libraries, but drugs.

>the poor
There's no hatred towards "the poor". However, there is a great deal of hatred for people who freely abuse the social contract because those are the people who ruin it for everyone else. Setting aside niggers for the moment, the kind of homeless who shit in public buildings, kidnap and eat pets, commit crimes and menace honest citizens at a point in time when literally every city worth panhandling in has public resources specifically dedicated to the homeless are not "down on their luck" or otherwise homeless by external misfortune that can be remedied via a social program. They are mentally ill (I include substance abuse under this heading), in which case they should be treated, and/or they are deliberately acting offensively and criminally for the sake of doing so and should be treated as criminals. There are an enormous population of homeless who act maliciously and malevolently simply because they can and because they need no other reason.

Vagrancy itself should be not be criminal, however. If someone is incorrigible enough that he decides that living outside of the system for better or ill is how he wants to live then go nuts - but in the same vein, someone who lives like this has no right to expect acceptance or support beyond what one individual would decide to extend to any countryman. Kind of like a relatively toothless outlawry, basically.
