isn't it actually a pretty good comparison. The series has some fantastical myths and stories, human themes, that even Homer would not have come up with. It also has universal human appeal that only great stories can have.

The only thing the marvel universe instilled in me is an irrational hatred towards Captain America.

just when you think bait can't get any worse, /lit/ exceeds your expectations tenfold.

I will take the bait, Marvel movies are the definition of "Explosions goes KABOOM! FIIUSH!!" There's absolutely nothing wrong with liking them but they're far from being a high piece of art like the Iliad.

I agree 100%. The oldtimers who stick up their nose to anything outside of musty books will be left behind in the culture wars.

Yeah, because cinephiles are always talking about Avengers, right?

Well cinephiles are just look bookish nerds who adore old things as they scorn contemporary art. Let them have their black and white slideshows.

Most of the meanings of classical works are imposed upon them by modern readers. Someone sufficiently motivated can make Avengers Endgame say whatever it is they want it to say.

It would not fly right now because the genre is too associated with juvenile consumerism, but later, when historical distancing does away with the association? Who knows.

Obvious bait is obvious, but in case the question is honest I have to add: the Iliad was a work that, while likely passed down through generations vocally, came down to one man remembering/editing/documenting it.

It was made to create and preserve culture.

The avengers was a movie made for profit by a committee of writers, producers, and actors in the seedy underbelly of culture known as Hollywood.
They're comic book heroes, and our society's fascination with them is much better compared with the books of 'knight-errantry' that rotted Don Quixotes brain.

The avengers are the cesspool that drives somebody to make good art.

This, back in those days do you think those were considered high art? No, intellectuals at the time in their robes said they represent the doom of all things. It also happened in Shakespeares time. Those weren't considered high art but populace fare for peasants.

Yes, they were considered high art even in their time.

That's a good question, I don't know that I could say we even have one.
huckleberry Finn is a pretty good historical and cultural work, but I dont think I would call it the American Iliad.

a lot of the early marvel comics (especially the ones jack kirby worked on) certainly have an interesting modern-mythic quality to them.

his later work, especially his fifth world saga for DC, seems even to be quite conscious of this

Capeshit is unironically closer to Catholic Saints than Classical Myth. If this thread is still up tomorrow, I'll explain. You're legitimately a midwit if you disagree btw. Not even memeing, I've told this to rednecks and manual laborers and they'll agree and tell you exactly why (and they'll be correct), but if you tell this to reddit they'll get really mad.
