I'm disappointed but I can't say I'm surprised. The Swedish Academy has once again failed in their task of awarding the most important author of the present age. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to pronounce "Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o". The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Kenyan history most of the jokes will go over a typical reader's head. There's also the author's fanonistic outlook, which is deftly woven into the narration—his cadence draws heavily on gicaandi singing, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these commentaries, to realize that they're not just politically poignant—they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Ngũgĩ truly ARE idiots—of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the sad humour in Matigari's existential catchphrase "I am looking for my children," which itself is a cryptic reference to Gakaara's Gikuyu epic Wa-Nduuta: Hingo ya Paawa. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's genius unfolds itself on the page in front of them. 2) improve the imagery. There is nothing particularly interesting in the imagery as it is: there is a light, there are some unspecified beasts, and that is it. It is a poem about nocturnal terror, the threats of darkness. This is a field rich for imagery and invention on part of the poet. A field rich for metaphor.
3) more memorable lines. More verbal power. Great poetry impresses itself upon our memory, becomes a part of us. The lines are well-conducted towards their end, but I feel that, other than "the camouflaging light of the nightlight", "the flesh in which his life is summarized", and "the beasts originate" the rest of the poem is somewhat prosaic.
