In my humblest opinion, Cormac Mccarthey has to be the greatest practical joke played, perhaps ever, upon the american literary world. How much are we expected to take of this, these pages of quasi-baroque spew, painfully tryhard obscurantism that finds necessary the mentioning of every bit of chaparral, every perambulation of the legs of a desert beetle, every wart upon the ass of his cardboard-cutout cowboys before doling out in suffocating helpings its sanctimonious, phony gospel that sounds like it comes out of a Batman comic. When can we admit to ourselves that all this macho bluster represents not the burgeoning revival of a new Melvillean element within the american intellectual world, but instead the cheap bastardization of the eternal form, the character of literature worth protecting above all, made into a tawdry slut by hacks like Harold Bloom, who praises Blood Meridian to the skies this dime-store cowboy story with mystery meat spiritualism stapled on? This book, this strange little book Blood Meridian, it absolutely baffles me how effortlessly it hooks in normies and redditors alike. It knows how to affect just enough, just fucking enough depth to make these mudmen think it could withstand multiple readings, but knows when to cut it short such that none of theshe hapless saps are scared away by the semblance of real depth.
