>The Vatican Apostolic Archive (Latin: Archivum Apostolicum Vaticanum; Italian: Archivio Apostolico Vaticano), known until October 2019 as the Vatican Secret Archive,is the central repository in the Vatican City of all acts promulgated by the Holy See. The pope, as Sovereign of Vatican City, owns the material held in the archive until his death or resignation, with ownership passing to his successor. The archive also contains state papers, correspondence, account books, and many other documents that the church has accumulated over the centuries. In the 17th century, under the orders of Pope Paul V, the Secret Archive was separated from the Vatican Library, where scholars had some very limited access, and remained closed to outsiders until the late 19th century, when Pope Leo XIII opened the archive to researchers, more than a thousand of whom now examine some of its documents each year.
From the sounds of it, tax records from the 17th century.

The boring answer is usually the correct one. Given that you need to know what you want to read in the first place to even be granted access, it's unlikely that there's anything too shocking in there.

The state has absolute sovreignty, so the Vatican has every right(?) to have their own archives. Every government has the same thing. Instuitions of science do as well. Do you think I could just walk up to CERN and the specs for their particle generator?

And you can walk into my house and go through my wallet and computer as long as you already know how much money is in my wallet and what my computer specs are :^)

The vatican periodically releases some of them every few ccenturies to keep people interested. The litterally have every single greek work ever created and widely known in the greek world.

I checked out the E-Vatican Archives, the website on which they publish some select things digitally, and all of the documents were in the very old Latin script which is basically impossible to decipher as a modern person. The only thing I understood was an Anglo-Saxon land charter since I'm familiar with the Old English script and it was just a land charter gifting some earl named Eormund 15 acres by a lake.

>> No.16407041

>>16407030
hehe, knowing latin is absolutely great for a history autist like I. I spent a decent amount of time trying to translate early 1500's treatise.

Off course the script and sometimes odd vulgar latin is a pain though.

Saying as all of the documents are incredibly fragile and even the slightest touch can shatter a priceless page their not allowing people into the library makes sense, especially with how many fat, sweaty, clumsy guys they'd have fumbling around with ancient documents.

Not wrong. of course by the late middle ages it gets codified a lot more and its easier to read. especially with print. But going back to the Carolingians and stuff, or some non offical handwriting is hard. even with a reference. There was like 20 different clerical scripts in france at some point.

While there probably are some records and dealings they would rather keep out of the public eye, it's more a case of wanting to preserve ancient documents for as long as they can. Believe it or not, paper is quite fragile and doesn't age very well
