How do the indian epics mahabharata and ramayana stack up against the illiad and the odyssey?

Read a shortened ramayana with the Gita and Upanishads. It was good, I perferred the adventures of ramayana.

Illiad and Odyssey are both also epic, but I would say that their themes are much different, with the Greek epics dealing with the hubris of men and the wrath of the gods, while the Hindu ones dealing more with obeying your dharma and your place in life.

Both series are good, read both.

One has a cool monkey bro (prototype of chewbacca) that leads an army of monkeys and the other doesn't.

When one reads epics from the Indians and epics from the ancient pagans of Europe it really baffles the mind as to how some peabrains today claim that ACKSHUALLY Hinduism and paganism are BASICALLY the same religion and that the former is the TRVE religion of the white man.

Agree with this. I also read the Ramayana as being an instruction manual on how to live and be a just ruler. The Iliad and Odyssey are kind of the opposite of that in that they're about characters that rebel against the natural order and disobey the gods. I think that might be because the Ramayana is supposed to be a religious text and the Greek works are epic poetry without a religious motive. Maybe, that's how I saw it anyway

Same. I saw the Ramayana as how people should idealistically act according to their Dharma, while the Greek Tragedies is about how people realistically act, positive attributes but also flaws. Aristotle mentions the epics many times in his "Poetics" talking about how the characters are good people who a realistic hubris like wrath or lust.
