You are using a symbol accompanied by many meanings. Take the distinction between literary fiction and genre fiction. In some sense, both would be called literature, in another, one is categorically moreso literature than the other, hence its name. This isn't to equate good essays to average genre fiction, but to make the point that this is an inevitably subjective question.
