He was surrounded by books and had no tolerance for the academics of cultural/societal sciences hamfisting their way into literature. The poor old sap just wanted to read, write, and talk about books but virtuous equanimity fanatics kept stealing his tomes and running up onto pulpits wailing in some indistinct language smudging their grimy fingerprints all over the pages. He was crabby and short-tempered. For good reason? That isn't for me to decide. But that's his problem. How did he describe it again? "The age of resentment" where the people in question "take the subject and plunge off the cliff like a rabblement of lemmings". The guy was funny and interesting. His dialectical was tightly bound and elliptically brilliant. It's a shame he got so tied up in polemics, though, he felt he was a king defending a treasury of literature against the marauding charlatanism of a people who were at the ends of the wits and had been reduced to grasping at straws. Really no winners there. Hence his giant fucking disillusioned, capitulating frown.

Only had I refreshed the thread sooner I would have linked my image to your reply. You so beautifully captured with word I could only just grasp within my own mind, to describe his personal situation and condition in amongst academia from the interviews I watched of him. Thank you.

I discovered him in high school whilst researching Hamlet for curricular study and became so captivated and enraptured by his soft, simple tone and cadence while conversing such complex themes and archetypes found in these huge tomes of Western tradition. Possibly because he grew up speaking Yiddish and Hebrew, then learning English later in life. Other such speeches of his have me convinced to read Moby-Dick. The day I heard he died there was a quiet solemnness which filled the air for me, no tears or heartache spent, but just the notice of how a giant had left Earth. I wish him peace for all the days to read of Falstaff in the sky.

Yeah. I remember the feeling. The earth certainly was lighter that day. Was at a house party with some people across state. Brought it up to some girl and she said she knew who he was and I subsequently sycophanted out all over him. I was also nearing the horizon of consciousness at the time as I had imbibed a little too much. Weird day.

Ngl, Bloom in all interviews I've read of him comes off as some sort of adorable grandpa, and he seemed genuinely intelligent and passionate, so props to him. However I've never been very impressed by his insight, strikes me as not that interesting a critic of literature ultimately.
