The issue with 4chan's format is that it gives an advantage to low-effort baitposting, since the only criterion for survival is how many posts reply to the thread. The larger the board, the more posts compete with each other, and the more thoughtful, time-intensive posts are disadvantages. The two ways to address this is to fragment the board and make it smaller or to increase moderation. Fragmentation is probably the easiest solution and would help moderation too, since smaller communities are easier to monitor.

I've just given it some thinking, and I figured it out. The core problem is this: the vast majority of the people on this board DO NOT READ BOOKS. They're not interested in talking about literature. They're interested in talking about their political and philosophical ideas. Every thread that's about a specific book (like this one, for instance >>16217622) gets around 20 posts before dying. Every single time. This is because only a very small portion of the board's population is actually interested in discussing literature, I'd guess it's <10%.
So what's the solution? If we make a containment philosophy board, I predict that this board will get almost no activity (which maybe isn't a bad thing). Honestly, I think actual literature discussion on /lit/ could easily fit into a single thread. Does /lit/ even deserve it's own board? Would it be better to just have a /lit/ general on the philosophy board?
