How would you rank the major languages in terms of potential for expression? As in, how much the structure, vocabulary, and other aspects of the language allow for complex and nuanced expression of ideas.
imo: English and German S tier, the Scandinavian languages A tier, Korean B tier, power gap, Spanish and French D tier, Japanese F tier

In my experience the ability to articulate ones ideas well has nothing to do with the language and everything to do with the speaker.
If you aren't interested in telling a story and just want to convey your thoughts, any language should be perfectly fine.

>> No.16219499

All languages are equally capable of expressing the same ideas. The only difference is how they do it, and the arbitrary tastes of the individual (many Africans consider French to be stale, limited, and clunky because of its orthography and lack of tonality; the Chinese find synthetic languages to be similarly simplistic'.

You can perfectly translate the joke to French, it would just lose the humor because of requiring footnotes or explanations ("In English, the word 'play' means..."). Is stating a feeling a substitute for the feeling? Not quite, but the idea that you can construct a language where you cannot express concepts is just flat out incorrect. That's not how languages work. That's not how the human brain works.

>>16220307
Sure they can, some languages are better at expressing certain things than others, or can do so more easily, but these are very niche concepts ("mower of grass" vs "lawn mower").

Why did you guys rated Portuguese so high? Portuguese is my native language and I don't really see anything special about that, the best thing about being Portuguese fluent is that you have a big advantage in learning Spanish, Italian and maybe French. Even a Portuguese native that never studied or had any contact with the Spanish language can have a casual conversation with a Spanish person.

Spanish and French are definitely one tier above Portuguese. Italian is my favorite language (the Country too), very interesting accent in my opinion but I don't really see the point of learning unless you're going to live in Italy or San Marino.
