>If you want to discuss history, religion, or the humanities, go to /his/
>If you want to discuss politics, go to /pol/
>discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works
>/lit/ is for the discussion of literature

The sticky isn't doing its job, so I think we should have a thread dedicated to philosophy. This way we can salvage some of this board for a discussion of literature. Anyone wanting to start a pastebin is more than welcome to, I just want more book-centered threads.

Please keep it book related, as this is a literature board.

Stop being a faggot why do you think we need a General for something as broad as philosophy. Maybe a QTDDTOT But even that’s a stretch. Get back to r/reddit edge lord

How much of Plato and Aristotle do I need to read to be able to understand the Germans?

I'm halfway through Plato's republican and about 1/4th of the way through Aristotle's metaphysics. I've been considering just dropping $60 on the complete works of Aristotle cuz I like him so much, but I don't wanna just keep endlessly reading through the greeks before moving onto more interesting stuff

I've recently read Capitalist Realism, and am interested in Schmitt. How does Schmitts anti-liberal dichotomy compare to today's standards when Fisher critiques us as having spread an inescapably homogeneous society? I guess the argument is that modernism is over, but does that mean that Schmitt style realism is also over?

I read "Four Essays on Philosophy" by Mao Zedong these days. Must read book to understand dialectic transform of Communism to state capitalism in China. Failure of Communist practice turns China to mixed economic totalitarian dystopia.

I'm reading the Presocratics right now. I've finished the fragments we have of Thales, and I'm now reading Anaximander's work.

Isn't maoism predicated on the use of state capitalism as a transitional tool, or did I miss something?

you should search "Great Leap Forward". They tried to transform economy once but it end with disaster. After Mao's death, Deng Xiaoping became in charge of China and applied economic reforms to transform china to state capitalism.

What's the point of philosophy?
What does philosophy do that other disciplines don't?
What's the difference between theist (by reason not revelation) religions and methaphysics?
What are the criterias to say one philosophy is a good one?

>> No.16204175

>What's the point of philosophy?
To prepare for death and being dead. And to become as close to a god as is humanly possible. To know being qua being.
>What does philosophy do that other disciplines don't?
Philosophy teaches the other disciplines, no other discipline teaches philosophy as philosophy is the craft of crafts and science of sciences.
>What's the difference between theist (by reason not revelation) religions and methaphysics?
dunno
>What are the criterias to say one philosophy is a good one?
Knowledge, their virtue and providential acts(as in bringing their inferiors toward the gods too).

1. Personal growth through personal doubt reassured with personal certainty/understanding.
2. Question everything, hold no dogma, follow any path. You may be tempted to hold science is contrast but science lazily defines everything it can in order to test out hypothesis. The "lazily defines" is worrisome. It leads to scientific discoveries that outpace the mental maturity needed to handle the discoveries responsibly.
3. If you're talking about mysticism in general, there isn't any large gap. But philosophical metaphysics looks unfavorably to dogma and it doesn't have any issues with science, which holds a lot of really good arguments. Theistic religions are sometimes shady, have "secret sects" that hold deep secrets no one else can know. This is not necessarily against philosophy but it may hinder its proper practice.
4. It makes the person practicing somewhat better for it. But a philosophy is not a religion you follow. You can pick it up, take the good thing(s) you read, and leave the rest behind. The best philosophy follows these steps ad continuum.
