No but are you referring to that Elisha Long dude? I forgot if that was his meme reframing or if he got that specifically from somewhere.

No. Memes are cultural; the Heroes Journey is innate.

well put.
It's found in every culture making it somewhat a metaphysical concept.

This. In 5th we had to write a short story about whatever we wanted and mine literally followed OP's pic despite me never reading fiction at that age.

>tfw no call to adventure

>> No.16161781

I think it's more like a combination of memes if you're doing the meme-gene analogy. It's like the human skeletal structure isn't due to a single gene, and while there are differences among races, most human skeletons are pretty similar because all these genes would need to change a lot to become something else. So a human culture would have to become radically different to develop a hero that significantly departs from the hero's journey, as opposed to a single mutated meme.

There are no calls to adventure anymore. (No, developing consoomer products doesn’t count)

That's a pretty cultural statement you just made

>> No.16161838

Wait, people actually think this is sort of an innate narrative structure and not culturally transmited?

The fact that it spans cultures and goes back to the oldest known oral stories/poetry seems to mean it may be considered innate to humans

Well, yes, it does fit the technical definition of a meme, that being said it’s a good way for a noob writer to structure their story in order to produce something relatively interesting to the reader. Character growth and personal struggle are integral to dramatic writing.

No, humans have innate complexes that leverage significance to a degree that cannot be explained by their personal experience, there is a deeper programming and it is relevant and should be applied towards their future choice making once they've gained the awareness to make the distinction.

lit is full of idiots, don't ignore archetypes they are there for you to use so that you can have advantage over the unenlightened

Do people actually read this and think it's complicated? It's literally just:
>I'm dissatisfied with my reality
>I decide to make a change which destroys the expected patterns of behavior
>The result is a new reality.
You could just write "Δ but scary" on a page and it would represent the same information.

Exactly, the pic related in my post is just a rehashing of the hero's journey. The reason the diagrams get so complex is because Peterson builds on top of them and expands the model.
See picrel for Peterson's attempt at understanding the enuma elish as a similar (albeit slightly more complex because of the cosmological scale of the narrative) structure.

I bought the book when I was younger. The one by Christopher vogler. That's just a shame to me.

But as for it being a meme, it's an alright framework but it's best to innovate.

Human self-awareness is tied directly to outcomes of fundamental rules, until we draw awareness from the rules pre-outcome we are simply deluding ourselves.

It's a great tool to use to get a deeper understanding of a civilization by applying it to said civ's world mythology. It's great from an anthropological POV, but you should use it in conjunction with other analytical methods, such as Jungian psychology (shadows, etc)
