i'd read the illiad and the oddessy, then all of plato and socrates, then the bible with full commentary as a foundation of western understanding. then move on to rationalism with spinoza, descarte, and then enlightenment with voltaire, locke, and the like while brushing up on your history about napolean and colonialism. then i'd read kierkegaard and watch a ww1 documentary and refresh your understanding of the implications of mechanized warfare. after that, i'd read existential philosophy sartre and heidegger and optionally some modernist literature like hemingway joyce or woolf. once you've finally familiarized yourself with existential modernist philosophy and most importantly why they arrived to these ideas and struggles, then i'd start kafka by reading the metamorphosis because it's short and more direct/straightforward. then i'd read the trial as it shows how these issues are a result of the systemic failure of society (as evidenced by ww1)
