Mechanical ventilation is awful. You have a giant thing surrounding your face and stuffed down your throat. You can't read and it's so loud you can't listen to music. One of the worst ways to die. Most patients need antinausea and anxiolytic drugs just to be prevent severe panic on the damned things.

If you need to be put on a ventilator, ask for negative pressure ventilation. They are not only more efficacious for viral pulmonary dysfunction, but are not a hell inducing nightmare for your last moments like the plastic Alienesque (as in the movie) above. Indeed, you can still read and watch movies in them, drink tea, talk to your relatives in your last moments and confess if need be. Most hospitals still have iron lungs in the basement they can fire up.
