As someone with a serviceable amount of Japanese ability, I can tell you first hand that learning moon runes for literature alone as an English speaker is simply not worth the immense effort.

As someone with a more than serviceable knowledge of Japanese, I can tell you first-hand that learning it for literature and everything associated as an English speaker is very much worth the immense effort. But only if you're genuinely committed.

>Mishima
>Homophobic environment
If I recall correctly, his environment wasn't homophobic because there wasn't even an idea of homosexuality. He had no idea what he was or what his problem was. In a way, his problem was the absence of homophobia.

1st We're not Romans and Romans are ded. Also sodomizing is gayer than receiving because nothing is more degrading than anilingus or putting any part of the body in someone's shithole. The popular culture of Rome according to your post was that a feminine/unmanly person is the person who is most degraded. All that aside don't derail the conversation by confusing manliness with gayness, and being gay with being a sodomite.

Confessions of a Mask is one of the most painful books I've ever read, not because it was bad, quite the contrary, but because how close it hits. I've had a lot of experiences and thoughts similar to those of the protagonist.

Homosexuality in Japan dates back to at least the 11th century anon

>> No.16026294

Having finished the sea of fertility it fucking bummed me out how Satoko never acknowledged that she loved kiyoaki in the final chapter, or that he even existed, or she had known him. Just for me personally it fucking sucked. If she'd at least loed him, it would have offered me some comfort you know- nothing more than that. It would hae made the love pure. Aside from that, spring snow is the best novel I've ever read I think. the rest of em wee just not that good hey

>> No.16026317

My dumb interpretation was that she did, infact love him. So much so that she was willing to go against the imperial wills. And she loved him so much, that when Kiyoaki died, her love for him died with him, leaving her to live rest of her life as the abbess. Sad ending, nonetheless.

>> No.16026332

>>16026317
well i'd have to disagree with you on a couple of points, she takes the tonsure before kiyoakis death for one, and upon hondas pleas to the previous abbess of gesshu which detail kiyoakis sickness there is a small sob heard in the background. presumably this is satoko and she is emotional at his suffering, she still loves him, and yet she persists in a course of action which will lead the two of them apart. my gripe is that the bitter motherfucker mishima didnt give the people what they wanted and have satoko at least say she loved him at the end of the series. but we didn't get that.

Homosexuality has existed since humanity gained conciousness because it is then that we saw something we can do, as something we could do. However by the virtue of its existence, it does not mean it is morally correct.

He very clearly knew he was gay and it shows in all of his writings. However, he just never wanted to fully embrace it because his sexuality and the persona he tried to create was rooted in his constricting childhood.
