Honestly it's hard to recommend starting with Capital since I couldn't make much headway with it myself until I read Kołakowski's Main Currents of Marxism, mainly the first volume about Marx and Engels specifically. But it made Capital perfectly comprehensible, far more than my attempt at David Harvey's Reading Capital did. So I would recommend starting there if you don't mind secondary material.

Now my plan is to read the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right (1843), the Paris Manuscripts (1844), the German Ideology (1845), the Grundrisse (1857 iirc), and then Capital (1867). Kołakowski motivated me that much to understand Marx in depth.

My suggestion if you are right wing is to play around with swapping out the revolutionary organic nation for Marx's revolutionary proletariat, as the agent of socialism, and ask if his dialectic and his sociological method still work. I think they both do, but at the very least, the latter does. I also think that Marx may have been a national socialist if he saw how bad things have gotten now. He didn't want just any revolution, things had to be at a certain level of class consciousness and socio-economic progress before the true proletarian revolution could happen. We've backslid so badly into pre-revolutionary conditions, and created such a rigidified lumpenproletariat, that I think he would be for breaking it up with intermediate measures to get us back to the level of the German welfare state and SDP at his time, as a preliminary to any possible proletarian revolution. These measures would look to almost anybody these days like national socialism. Most of the utopian socialists Marx and Engels saw as an incomplete preliminary to true socialism were effectively national socialists.
