>About the Negroes, the kind I don't like is the philosophizing prophesying pontificating kind, the James Baldwin kind. Very ignorant but never silent...[Martin Luther] King I don't think is the age's great saint...My question is usually, would this person be endurable if white? If Baldwin were white nobody would stand him a minute. [Flannery O'Connor]

They are writers because they are terrible speakers. When you poor at, or unable to, articulate your feelings off the cuff in speech, you turn to writing where you have more control.

I don't know if this is true as a general rule, but it is definitely true of me!

Also, if you liked OP's video, check out the Dick Cavett episode with Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal. Though Mailer was unquestionably the greater writer, he just comes across as a sputtering doofus compared to the more eloquent and composed Vidal.

Because they spend their time writing, not speaking.

False. Good writers use their mouth and ears twice as much as their right hand. Anyway, Baldwin is a good speaker and an interesting thinker, especially when he is not interrupted every other sentence.

Read Schopenhauer's 37 Ways to Win an Argument
Speech and debate are not about reason. The guy who is the most unhinged and unprincipled always wins. Anyone who is concerned with whether or not what they are saying is rational, true, and comprehensible will lose in a debate unless they've spent hours preparing in advance, already know what their opponent will say, and have prepared responses.
Basically, debate is for the unscrupulous.

This. Also it's given that when you spend most of your time writing, you won't exactly develop top notch speaking skills.

This. You really do have your words fall on deaf ears when people don't actually WANT to believe you.
