Things are more complex than they seem. Culturally, the British Raj and the Islamic invasions only concerned the elites. It was very superficial, more like painting a wall a different colour rather than building a new wall. In the end Islam was more successful because it, with time, it managed to convert a few people (but once again mainly people from the elites) but just look at how the partition went, how the BJP treats muslims now, at the Ayodhya dispute, etc. Compare India with others countries that stayed a long time under Islamic rule (with a real administration like the Mughal empire, not just tribes): their population is now almost only Muslim.
