I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I'm now serious about writing a fantasy novel.

Having read Abercrombie, I am sure, CERTAIN even, that I am a better writer than him with a superior imagination.

>The barbarian wanted me as his woman, and my crew handed me over!
>I knew there would be sacrifices when I volunteered for the intergalactic mission. I just never imagined my crew mates would trade me to a fierce Viking warrior on a distant planet to save themselves!
>Now I’m stuck on a frozen rock, light years from Earth, with a barbarian who’s convinced I’m his fated mate. And he wants to claim me. To take me to his fur-lined bed. The worst part? I’m tempted to let him...
>Sure, he’s strong and sexy and I haven’t felt warm in days, but it’s more than that. For the first time, I’m insecure and struggling to fit in. I don’t really belong here. I’m used to reading books by the fire, not carrying a sword I can barely lift while foraging for food. The other villagers stare at me, their eyes overflowing with suspicion. And my new man, Einar? His fierceness intimidates me!
>If I let him into my bed, maybe I can thaw his cold heart...
>Einar is a standalone sci-fi alien romance, full of lots of steamy action. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a happy ending!

Sanderson talks about being a Discovery writer vs Outline writer. Find out to what extent you are able to develop your story just by writing or if you prefer to construct it all from scratch.

I've only read two non-REH Conan books and from what I've gathered they're the best non-REH Conan tales: Conan: Road of Kings by Karl Edward Wager and Conan and the Emerald Lotus by John Hocking. I prefer RoK over Emerald Lotus even though EL has more stuff happening within its story. Wagner understood Conan better than any other writer besides REH and his characterization in RoK is perfect. I also prefer the darker tone of RoK over EL. EL is still good though and a great S&S book even if Conan wasn't the main character.

Worms of the Earth is not only the best Bran Mark Morn story, but one of the best stories REH wrote period. Read it right now if you have the time. Speaking as person that did 6 years of creative writing at University;
What you will want to do is scour for multiple inspirations for HOW TO WRITE WELL.
A lot of people confuse effort with quality, you need to realise that a higher quality piece will always be better than "I wrote X00,000 words in 3 months" and it barely passes for YA.

>>15960821
>>15960816
These two are very close to the correct answer, but have a bit of drawback.
University introduction to writing courses (and the more advance creative writing courses) provide phenomenal understanding of foundations to writing. I would highly recommend studying a serious literature unit as well as a drama unit to really get a grasp on powerful dialogue.
Sad fact, university based courses aren't for everyone - even though they provide the best information on how to improve writing quality.
This will seem very contrarian to the next point, but you need to keep in mind this is 'refining' your writing as a skill.

>>15960826
>>15960839
>Sanderson approach
>Sanderson lecture advice, not even his podcasts
I don't mean to bash because I actually like the dude. But do not follow this, for two very real reasons;
You want to write fantasy with your own voice, not somebody elses. And this is writing as a means to get ideas onto a page - writing to think, rather than writing to be read.
Brandon is teaching lectures in an environment that produces more Sandersons; not new authors. He doesn't teach HOW to write well, his lectures are for writing fantasy.
If you watch his lectures (other than basic plotting because curriculum demands, expectations, etc) you'll start to see that there really isn't much 'writing' being done, rather shit that no one will either see, or that you will have to work around to write. Explaining your magic system isn't writing, it's telling - no matter how well you do it, you are not developing your story in any way.
If you really like the guy and think he's got a good approach to teaching, I would recommend his podcast instead. There he at least has people to correct him and bounce of him to provide better points.

There is a free, and more serious lecture (about academic writing, but it actually works for creative writing as well) which has been far more valuable than any class I have been in.
The idea is that you're writing to a group, rather than writing for yourself; once you truly understand this, you will shift how you write in a more positive way.

Start out with a compelling character so your audience is invested. Within the first page the audience should know
1. Who they are
2. Where they are
3. What they want.

Then, string all of your interesting ideas out in the order that makes the most logical sense. How much material do you have? If you want your book to be well paced, you should be introducing a new idea every two pages or so. If you have a section of the story that goes for more than that without anything happening that excites you as an author, throw it in the garbage. Chuck it. Timeskip past it, it isn't doing you any good.
If the beginning of your story doesn't have anything interesting, trash it and move the start of the story forward. Stories are about the most interesting parts of the character's lives.
Once you done that, look at how much you have left. Does it look more like a short story or a novel, or maybe even a series? Think about what option serves the story best. You might even consider whether another medium besides pure text would be best if you have access to other options.

This method has produced decent outlines for me. After this, you will of course continue to have new ideas while you write. Don't feel chained to the outline. Follow your inspirations and allow your characters and themes to develop naturally. Your story will get significantly longer as this happens, but that's okay. That's why we worked so hard to cut it down to size during the planning stage. It's much easier to grow a story than it is to shrink it.
Lastly, and I know this is a horrible cliche, but have fun while you write. Life's too short to suffer for your art. In my experience, when the author is suffering, the text suffers too. If you look forward to writing every day, you're doing something right.

Any sff like this?

I wiped the blade against my jeans and walked into the bar. It was mid-afternoon, very
hot and still. The bar was deserted. I ordered a whisky. The barman looked at the blood
and asked:
‘God?’
‘Yeah.’
‘S’pose it’s time someone finished that hypocritical little punk, always bragging about
his old man’s power…’
He smiled crookedly, insinuatingly, a slight nausea shuddered through me. I replied
weakly:
‘It was kind of sick, he didn’t fight back or anything, just kept trying to touch me and
shit, like one of those dogs that try to fuck your leg. Something in me snapped, the
whingeing had ground me down too low. I really hated that sanctimonious little creep.’
‘So you snuffed him?’
‘Yeah, I’ve killed him, knifed the life out of him, once I started I got frenzied, it was
an ecstasy, I never knew I could hate so much.’
I felt very calm, slightly light-headed. The whisky tasted good, vaporizing in my
throat. We were silent for a few moments. The barman looked at me levelly, the edge of
his eyes twitching slightly with anxiety:
There’ll be trouble though, don’tcha think?’
‘I don’t give a shit, the threats are all used up, I just don’t give a shit.’
‘You know what they say about his old man? Ruthless bastard they say. Cruel…’
‘I just hope I’ve hurt him, if he even exists.’
‘Woulden wanna cross him merself,’ he muttered.
I wanted to say ‘yeah, well that’s where we differ’, but the energy for it wasn’t there.
The fan rotated languidly, casting spidery shadows across the room. We sat in silence a
little longer. The barman broke first:
‘So God’s dead?’
‘If that’s who he was. That fucking kid lied all the time. I just hope it’s true this time.’
The barman worked at one of his teeth with his tongue, uneasily:
‘It’s kindova big crime though, isn’t it? You know how it is, when one of the cops
goes down and everything’s dropped ’til they find the guy who did it. I mean, you’re not
just breaking a law, your breaking LAW.’
I scraped my finger along my jeans, and suspended it over the bar, so that a thick clot
of blood fell down into my whisky, and dissolved. I smiled:
‘Maybe it’s a big crime,’ I mused vaguely ‘but maybe it’s nothing at all…’ ‘…and we
have killed him’ writes Nietzsche, but—destituted of community—I crave a little time
with him on my own.
In perfect communion I lick the dagger foamed with God’s blood.

So I just finished Book of The New Sun for the first time. It took me years to do so, due to giving up after Shadow of The Torturer and Claw of The Conciliator. English isn't my first language, so reading BoTNS proved to be an exhausting task at times, especially due to me missing the point of some passages. As a result, I have read Shadow of The Torturer 4 times by now, Claw of the Conciliator 2 times and the third and forth books both once. The reason for my numerous restarts is that I would take a break and promptly forget the details. Having read the first book so many times has helped me realize things that I had missed simply due to rushing on.

I wanted now to talk about the book(s). I haven't yet read what comes after, but most probably will, at some point. Tell me about the meaning behind the play in the Claw, about the first man meshcia. I did not get what the meaning was there although I enjoyed the stories inside the story itself. I'm thinking of getting the books on my native language, to get some meanings more clearly. Any site or podcast that talks about the story? In the end I greatly enjoyed the story, but the last book felt the weakest of them to me. I'm not sure how I'd rank the others. In Citadel I wasn't that interested in the war, but I enjoyed the last 100 pages and the early parts, especially the story contest was interesting and the ascian mindset.

Tldr. Talk about Book of The New Sun :)

>the meaning behind the play in the Claw
I saw it as a foreshadowing device, in line with all the metafiction stuff in it. You'd have to read Urth of the New Sun to make sense of its meaning though.
It's basically a prophecy, like a Biblical one, except that instead of some guy having visions, or dreams or meeting angels while fully awake, it's a play. Not sure how Talos knows the plot though (might be inspired or stolen from something from the Hierogrammates). It could be a Genesis like tale from another universe, another planet. The fun in New Sun is transforming the text into your own stories.
Meschia and Meschiane are just analogues to Adam and Eve iirc.
>Any site or podcast that talks about the story?

Just the title of the play hints at what the meaning is. I guess it would be a bit more obvious if it were called Revelation and Genesis. I believe it's purpose was to give us an idea of what would happen to Urth when the New Sun arrived. In Urth of the New Sun Severian brings up how things that happened in the play are now happening to him for real. Meschia is the Adam figure for this new Urth that will come with the New Sun.

Alzabo Soup is currently the only podcast I know of that has episodes for the entire series.

My problems stem from me not understanding english at a native level and taking breaks between the books I read a lot and while I greatly enjoyed reading BoTNS, I'd take my break and forget some details, forcing myself to begin from the start later on. I was looking for something to read (it's vacation time of the year after all) and realized I still hadn't finished BoTNS, so I just decided to not take much of a break between books, as those easily stretch too much for me and powered through it. It taking years for me to complete is just that I read Shadow of The Torturer for the first time in high school and I wasn't ready for it back then.

>In somewhat surprising news, Patrick Rothfuss's editor Betsy Wollheim has reported that she is yet to read any material from his next novel, The Doors of Stone, the third and concluding volume in The Kingkiller Chronicle, and notes a lack of communication on the book's progress.

>"This article is right: authors don't owe their readership books, but what about the publishers who paid them? Book publishing is not as lucrative as many other professions, and publishers rely on their strongest sellers to keep their companies (especially small companies like DAW) afloat. When authors don't produce, it basically fucks their publishers. And I don't get the "blame the editor" part at all. Don't you think we editors want to publish the books we buy? That is just nuts. Isn't that the content his readers want?
Because that's what he's being paid for. And boy must it pay well. From selling 10 Million units of arguably the most successful mainstream fantasy this (last?) decade, to sitting in a dirty office in front of a webcam making twitch videos.

I miss the time when an author was often a socially incompetent nerd that wrote for the sake of writing, and then realising that they hate the readers that made their books popular, so they shut themselves in and write more.
Sure you can have 'Oops, I rolled a 1, everyone please laugh.' and 'I'm going to talk my feewings on twitch about my laziness to write an end to a trilogy' - but you can also write at least a page in a day for fuck sake.

UUUGGGGHHHHHH
10 more hours of this. TEN MORE HOURS. Hobb is stretching out such a thread bare story. WHY?!
For comparison, the Assassin's apprentice was a little over 17 hours. Ship of Destiny is over 33 hours. Stuff that should have happened in the beginning or middle of book 2, are finally happening now in the latter third of book 3. So after 2 and 2/3rds books. NINETY TWO HOURS into the story, they FINALLY get around to revealing what was so bluntly foreshadowed since the first book: Kennit was raped as a boy, and now he hungers for boy flesh in some sick way to take back power, after feeling so powerless himself.

And they tie this DUH revelation with of course: the rape of the boy's sister. Kennit rationalizes that his action are different because Althea is a girl and she "likes him". So he drugs her with wine Cosby style and date rapes her. During which, she has nightmare flashbacks to a boy she fucked as a young girl. And in her memory, she wanted him, but the changed her mind mid-fucking. And then her sister shamed her when she told her about it. And so essentially, this whole series finally reveals its ultimate feminist value: regretting sex is akin to rape.

And there's still 10 hours of this. I have given up all hope or expectation now. I'm going to finish this. But only so I can say I have. But I no longer expect to like anything after this point. The plot is not that complex or deep or interesting to warrant the time sink. But I'm going to see it to the end anyway.

I literally just finished Dune and fucking hated it. Can anyone describe exactly what they found so great about it? I'm absolutely bewildered that its praised so much in every scifi community, let alone that its won awards and is somehow the best selling sci fi book of all time.
Apart from the mildly interesting ecological world-building of Arrakis, which itself is pretty flawed and largely corny, there wasn't a single thing i found compelling about the book. I can appreciate how it might've inspired later works like star wars, but that doesn't make it good.
The prose and the characters really ruined it for me - either i'm a retard and am missing something, or Frank herbert is the retard.

Spoilers for Blindsight and Echopraxia:
Is there any evidence in Blindsight for the idea in Echopraxia that Siri (the Siri narrating Blindsight from his coffin) may be an alien construct? If that were the case it would mean the entire novel Blindsight was from the perspective of an alien pretending to be human. I just read both back to back and I don't recall anything of that nature, though I of course wasn't looking for it. Nothing stands out to me in hindsight either, so I'm wondering if this is something the author came up with after the fact.

No, your brain is just unable to render enough polygons.

>> No.15974152

Are you one of those people the media keeps talking about, who are unable to form visual imagery in their heads?
I do not intend to be mean, I am genuinely curious. I am able to form vivid images of what I am reading, and visual adaptations only rarely stand up to the mark.

>> No.15974167

>>15974140
I can't stand manga, honestly. I don't know what it is about it, something about the presentation, but I hate reading it.
>>15974152
Not him, but I like them because they're capable of delivering this kind of immersive cathartic experience that's hard to find in other media. Not all of them can do it of course so I'm kind of picky about them. I'm able to visualize just fine, though I think the provided visuals and music do help on this front.

Also I might go so far as to say that the music helps more than the visuals.
