Perhaps it signifies such a deep, dark, hole in my spirituality that I've come to /lit/ to ask for life advice, but I have seen some genuinely insightful comments on here so fuck it. I'm majoring in economics at a shitty state school in America and I while I'm decent enough at it (not great by any means) I really just genuinely loathe it. Coupled with that, I see no other option for myself after graduation besides further education. After reading some philosophy which could be considered "spiritual" I guess (Laozi, Nasr on Sufism, Eliade, the Upanishads etc.) I find myself more and more intrigued in theology in general. Now, I realize it's not ideal to uproot your entire academic career thus far to do something you might end up not enjoying, but jesus do I hate economics. I simply don't know what I should do, is it indulgent to seek out a life based on religion when I'm so far only interested on a surface level?

People have come to know true faith through stranger routes than yours, friend. Give it a try and see where it takes you. You don't always have to stay at the surface level.

Get money. Universities suck and are soul sucking. I love doing physics, and even I am looking to get out of this shit. In a university you WILL become a pencil licking bureaucrat. In my field its easy to obtain a position, I can't imagine for theology.

Use economics to get money and establish a life. You don't feel like it yet, but one of the most fulfilling things in life is raising children and establishing a family. Don't become a cuck and let yourself be ruines by the IQ shredser. Remain disciplined and study and write in your own time. If you have obtained a graduate level in one subject you can attain that level on your own volition afterwards. Imo the first time is necessary though, to learn proper academic communication, temper and maturity. Otherwise you'll become an Amazon "self-published" schizo.

So short advice: get an as advanced degree as possible in something that can make you money (make sure you don't actually kys though). Be frugal and establish yourself and you can follow your own goals.

Read Aristotle's ethics. He has a section on money. It's real. A poor man can't be virtuous because he cannot choose to be anything.

>is it indulgent to seek out a life based on religion
well, let's just put it this way:

theres a reason why less than 10% of academic physicists and philosophers identify as theists.

it's just simply not a tenable belief given what we now know and you hit on an important factor that your interest in it is precisely because it is only superficial.

if you're really interested in "bigger answers" beyond economics, look into cosmology or molecular biology. even the pop stuff that Scientific American publishes will probably give you the sense of meaning you're looking for.

he'sa clown and only a hero to dilettantes. if you actually understood the science that he invokes you'd realize how facile his stuff is.

what do we know now? do we know how bodies can be self-convertive, how they can reverse to themselves? do we know anything about the non-rational ground of reality?
