I've heard it's a mess if you try to read it like a book

It's actually way more fun than you think. It's a really good book.

Well, yes and no.

You can read the Pentateuch as a book, and you can read Joshua through Chronicles as a book. Esther, Nehemiah, and the exilic literature depart significantly from being a book, as do the prophets and psalms. The NT returns to narrative form however.

You can't go very wrong by reading it in any order.

Your appraisal of it says more about you than it.

I didn't appraise anything.
I just thought what you said was funny.

You want me to explain why I have not read the bible, the book I just made a thread about, or do you want me to explain why you should read the bible?

>> No.15846228

lately i've been thinking about the opening to the gospel of matthew

>2Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
>3And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
>4And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
>5And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
>6And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
>7And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
>8And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
>9And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
>10And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
>11And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
>12And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
>13And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
>14And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
>15And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
>16And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
>17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

anyone have favorite writings on this section? the only thing i really know about it is the unheard of inclusion of five women in a genealogy (usually only patriarchs) and them all being adulterers, incestuous, or otherwise unusually holy and important for women in the bible. this is something im interested in, but i want to read more takes as well. numerology? connection to modernist lit? anything. i want to hear it all.

Nonsense, the Bible and Greek mythology are the base for nearly all Western literature. Even comics like superman are biblical. Reading the bible for religion is a mistake, you read it so you can fully appreciate what you read.

Reading for me is like developing the lore of some intricate RPG. Lots of books I've read, and paintings I've seen reference the bible. My headcanon of the current meta is that the bible is a rare and difficult to find book, there is so much art that references it made pre20th century, but the actual book itself was near purged from existence by some event. I will read it iff I find a pre1900 copy of the book, because that will fit my story.

Honestly, just because the Bible is an important historical text, doesnt make it great literature.

The Sallic Laws are important to understand the basics of Medieval Feudalism, doesnt make them great literature.

The Bible is a huge garbage bin of texts, some good, most bad, the psalms are sometimes really beatiful, the rest of the Bible is mostly garbage.

It's really boring. There are some cool parts and I've read those, but a lot of it is boring.

>> No.15849465

I did read it, it was garbage, and the people who wrote it were spiteful and pathetic. You must be when you base your entire identity on hating polytheism.

What a pathetic way to spend your life on this wonderful planet

I'm not religious, and from the few excerpts I did read, it seemed to me that the Bible has no merit as a work of fiction.
