Clausewitz isn’t exactly modern but you could check him out. More modern than Sun Tzu

There are hundreds of interesting war memoirs of people who had both major and minor commands. Clausewitz is the classic by a general. Ludendorff's Total War is still untranslated I believe. But really the most interesting stuff is the nitty gritty, reading actual commanders' experiences at every level of command, from asymmetrical and symmetrical warfare.
