Hi /lit/
I turn 30 this month, I’m currently going through a divorce, I hate my current city and home (LA) my 3 closest friends are moving to another state and I can’t leave until I’m licensed in my current career which will be 3-6 months. I’ll be entirely alone. I’ve struggled with alcoholism and have been in and out of AA. Currently out. All of this spells depression, disaster, and suicide. So, I’m doing everything in my power to change who I am at a core level and genuinely improve myself.

Today I was going to go to /v/ like I always would have at work, but instead I came here. I’m eating healthier, exercising daily, going to see a therapist next week. I’m trying every day to think positively and improve.
My next step is getting back into reading. Where should a man in my shoes start?

tldr; in a bad funk, trying to change, suggested books

Pic related is my favorite book and author.

Stoner, pretty much anything from Kafka, early Joyce. And maybe a bit of Don Quixote to cheer you up and that.

Blood Meridian was my favorite as well for a long time until I read Moby Dick. Suttree is another fantastic book by McCarthy.
I always found that being in nature clears my mind more than anything. I supply take at least a weekend off and go hiking/camping/fishing/whatever interests you.

Ive tried the King James version but I really couldn’t hold my attention. I’ll try again but it was pretty hard the first time. I think the Bible is more something you study. Thank you.

Because of extenuating circumstances we got married after only knowing each other for 9 months. A year and a half later we both realized we were vastly different people with different interests and were unhappy.

Moby Dick seems to be a trend here, I’ve never read it, and you liked it more than Blood Meridian. Maybe I’ll start there.

Philip K. Dick's books always cheer me up for some reason.

BM was my favourite until I read Moby Dick. I think you would likely enjoy it because they contrast one another quite well. Plus Dick has some parts that really leave me feeling awe struck and full. Hope all goes well, seems like you got your head screwed on right.

Try the Knox translation of the Bible. http://catholicbible.online/knox/OT
KJV is a meme because it's basically Puritan lies and has unicorns n shit. Knox version takes a lot of poetic liberties, but it's a great read. I understand your hesitance at it being something you study, so maybe try the Psalms or Ecclesiastes and the rest of the books of wisdom.
