One of hedges weakest books(And lines of thought). Completly BTFO by the current political moment. Only relevant to people who have their home town living in their head rent-free. The Christian right have less power than ever and goes down every day. The fascists of today are the respectable progressive business's, media and business.

The Christian right will disappear and the American state will be no less 'facist' in character.

To be fair Hedges understands this. Being a prespertarian I think he's just struck by the deep hypicoracy and this causes him to obsess.

You are a retard for recommending it tho.

The Christian Right was always doomed to be destroyed by capitalism, which is what Reagan knew and why he courted them in order to win the election. He knew that if he could associate capitalism with being a Christian conservative, Christianity and conservatism would die, but capitalism would live. Spectacular piece of politics whether conscious or not.

A too sympathetic portrayal of Lenin, as Wilson himself later acknowledged, but an otherwise riveting history of socialist thought, written by one of America's greatest literary critics of all time.

If you are trying to transform yourself into a decent human being you shouldn't be trying to go through any "lefty gateway," unless by decent human being you mean the same idiot, just on the other (and more socially acceptable) side of the spectrum.

You should first come to terms with the idea that both sides overwhelmingly have only the best intentions of everyone at heart. Unfortunately, especially among the most extreme people on either side, their best intentions have given way to hate, and among the small amount of truth either side speaks on is a mountain of hate and unexamined untruth.

Books that helped me de-radicalize myself were Mill's On Liberty, Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, and Haidt/Lukianoff's The Coddling of the American Mind. On Liberty in particular encouraged me to expose myself to other viewpoints, and I read The Bell Curve and White Fragility. Open yourself to opposing viewpoints, even knowing you won't agree with them. Remove malice and ill-will from your mind. Have conversations with people.

Hegemony of opinion of any kind will lead to proliferation of idiotic opinions. We see this developing independently on both the American left and right. Both are bad. To not adhere to either one is not centrist; it is only to be independent from dogma. Examine everything and take truth from what remains strong. Hold that truth, whether it come from the left or the right, to guide your actions and discourses, but do not settle on it.

I’ve been on a political spectrum journey my whole life. True, one should stay independent of dogma, I never fell for Leninism, but centrist, status quo, neoliberalism is just as bad if not worse.

You think too ideologically. Ideology is dogma, or at least the fertile soil for it. You say you've been on an [ideology] journey your whole life. What in you changed that represented stops on that journey? Why are you confident now in something that you might have disagreed with before? Might the journey continue in the future? If so, then why be confident in the ideology you apply to yourself now? To pigeonhole yourself like that is to invite and enforce prejudice on discourse and the ideas that you are exposed to. It's to willingly place yourself into an group with the implicit recognition that there exists those outside of the group, the enemies. It is to take argumentation not as a discussion on ideas that are ever-changing in order to perhaps be shown a new perspective or part of the truth of a matter, but as a debate in which one person is wrong and one is right, and ideas must be defended from assault rather than delved deeply into for the purpose of developing nuance or understanding.

Inflammatory and used to further a bunch of retards agendas, but the statistics and studies were valid and of academic caliber. It's not useful just for its stats anymore considering how old it is, but most studies pretty much find in line with what The Bell Curve found. A 2015 study whose authors I can't remember did finally claim to have a list of variables that led to equitable outcomes between blacks and whites.
