Pewds is honestly kinda wholesome.
i used to dislike him when i first learned about him. i couldnt see the appeal in his videos, and he seemed to represent the rising tide of pro-Youtubers who offered shitty content.
but im not his target audience, and why should i blame Pewds for making what the people want? i used to bitch and moan about comic book movies and the slew of garbage Hollywood was putting out. at first, the vague entity of "Hollywood" seemed like the appropriate thing to direct my anger and frustration towards. i later realized that Hollywood wouldnt keep pumping out these movies if they didnt make money and/or appeal to the masses. it was only later did i understand the masses have, what one would colloquially call on the interwebs, "shit taste." but hey, shit taste aint a crime. you like what you like. and while i may disagree with your opinion, that's just like, my opinion man.
but Pewds has grown as a person and persona. here's a dude doing what he loves, unafraid to branch out from Let's Plays, and seems like an authentic kind of guy. also something something Nazi scandal.
this is a man who has, by all accounts, made it. and while not strictly a posterboy for the Chins, he does seem to be a contender for /ourguy/.

I don't blame Pewd personally, but he is just a piece of a larger problem of the modern human psyche. We're wired to be empathetic. The mechanism by which we generate empathy is neural mirroring. It is a useful mechanism for passing along temperament along with learned behaviors in a culture. Every culture eventually created some form of mythos out of this phenomenon of ideal mirroring.

Fast forward to modern times. Modern man has abandoned the old and dead mythos for the instantaneous and live celebrity worship. Our gods walk among us broadcasted to us in real time and at our total convenience. The results of which are summed up by the global reaction to the current protests. But that is only the dominant and loudest voice of the phenomenon. It is the loudest because it operates by providing an illusory sense of connection to its acolytes. There is also a silent erosion at work in both the loudest and quietest members of those afflicted by social media.

If the normies represent the loud collective then we represent the other end of the spectrum. The quiet individualist. But make no mistake, we are sick as well in our own way! A much more subtle but fundamentally similar way because of a shared addiction to vicarious experience. I admit my own addiction to anonymous social media here.

The problem is that I have stopped feeling the primacy of emotions in my daily life. I live a pantomime of a richly emotional life through the incessant digestion of vicarious experience. Gordon Ramsey is my wrath, Bob Ross my kindness, and Kanye West my pride. I feel nothing from my lived experience, but I can tune in to any personality to receive a dose of fortified experience at my convenience. I am not depressed, I am utterly withdrawn from exposure to authentic lived experience that pertains to solely my personal narrative. I actively and aggressively ignore my environment in favor of an artificial construct. What constitutes my life is a binge of safe vicarious experience that I have control over. As if wrath could ever be paused by a finger tap!

Why do I feel nothing? Why are normies seemingly insane? Nobody is living in the moment. We're all sick with convenient imitation information. Why would I take risks in my own life when I can receive a substitute dose from a position of safety?
