15457816 No.15457816 [Reply] [Original]

Has reading philosophy ever left you satisfied with answers to the abstract questions of life, such as whether we have free will or what consciousness is?

In my case, every time I read philosophy I leave more confused than when I went in. All arguments start seeming preposterous, and even previously accepted premises are now in full doubt. The only tenable claims are that other claims can't be proved.

It seems that one must just embrace scepticism, and try to do something under the shaky foundations we have (science), otherwise they are doomed to idle in futile contemplation for the rest of their life.

I think philosophy is not about getting an answer, but learning to ask better questions

No but thinking about those things deeply on my own did.

I agree. Whenever I read a philosophy book I can't help but have the impression that I'm way smarter than the author and that I'm wasting my time reading the book.

Cope for midwits who don't have an intuitive lock on their own self and world. Philosophy should clarify and challenge intuitions that are already swimming down in there, if it's literally gibberish to you stop reading it

The only purpose reading philosophy can serve is reinforcing notions about the nature of existence you already thought were true. For people who either engaged in hedonistic pursuits or lived in restrictive environments, the discovery of philosophical systems can seem euphoric and life changing- and indeed they may be. But philosophy can eventually only serve to bolster what one already thinks and knows instinctually; every man has his own nature and cannot escape from it. This why the works that seem to be the most veritable are those which have the quality of articulating things one knew already in a more precise manner.

Had the opposite effect for me. Reading politics was just how you described - attempts at reinforcing unfounded beliefs, but philosophy actually made me question my own views.
