Idiots. The defining characteristic of literature isn't merely that you read it on a piece of paper. Something can be literary if it deals with themes prevalent in literature and provides the viewer with an aesthetic experience. Shinji is the opposite of what makes a traditional MC. He regresses and falls to doubting, he thrives on pity and not praise etc.

It is not necessarily an attack on the weak-willed or those live by inertia and the vicarious whims of others, but highlighting that ultimately everyone who pushes Shinji is motivated by something, not necessarily morality or his own well-being. A power struggle essentially.

I won’t carry on, but people that like EVA, like myself, accept that it is a purposefully subversive take on ANIME that does contain elements that are relatable but ultimately a take on its own genre.
