In the actual writings of the schools who say this they regard this claims as being valid only for the monk who has renounced all possessions to become one with God, but for everyone else living a life with a home and various responsibilities that it would be foolish for them to live like that. The only one who is fit to transcend the world is the monk who has renounced it, but if you are still playing your role in the drama you are supposed to follow your dharma and live in accordance with the divine universal harmony. So it would make no sense to attribute this to being responsible for historical changes, because the men who become monks and renounced the world were always a very tiny amount of the total population. It's not like farmers and soldiers were walking around thinking they were in a dream.
