Liberal is in the american political sphere conflated with leftism. It is cynical to attribute the most brutal capitalist doctrine to leftism. In europe this claim is not made. Here the conservatives (center right) push neoliberalism and leftists oppose it. It is so confusing to hear americans talk about left wing politics because to an european it sounds center right. It is hypercapitalism with a twist: you can marry a tranny and smoke weed but you are still fucked by musk and buffet. In germany we have a liberal party (FDP) and nobody would call them even remotely left wing. They push for weed and tranny rights as well. The left in europe is marginalised but in ideology they are still truly left wing (opposing neoliberalism).
