Can you narrow down some of your interests? And I'll try to throw out a few recommendations.

I can only speak to the US, but anthropology is often taught in a really unfortunate way. The 4 field model (ling anth, bio anth, sociocultural, and archeology) is still upheld as "what anthropology is", even though in practice this isn't really the case. Biological anthropology has mostly decamped to evolutionary biology departments, and mostly only exists at large state schools/very rich private schools that have the money and equipment to run highly specialized labs. At least in my experience, linguistic anthropology is a subset of sociocultural. Meanwhile, several to many high profile archaeology departments broke up with ethnography in the 90s and moved to separate buildings. Some have reconciled.

In my experience, anthro theory/anthro 101 courses are heavy on things that would better be thought of as part of the discipline's history. The content of those courses is usually some combination of basic social science texts (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Mauss, Levi-Strauss, Foucault, etc) and a selection of "classic ethnographies" that are worthwhile, but don't captivate or make people want to continue in Anthro. The problem spaces and concerns of contemporary anthropology are really only alluded to in that sort of course. Nothing in Anthro 101 pitches what is both distinctive and applicable about anthropology for understanding the world today.

At the same time, anthropology is also one of the old 19th century master disciplines like natural history or philology -- except that it has somehow survived. As a result there's been a lot of soul searching and autocritique within anthropology (especially since the 80s, you've probably heard of the Writing Culture movement) about what that distinctive and applicable would be, and why it should be the domain of anthro, and not any number of other fields.

Anyawy, the Wikipedia page Bibliography of Anthropology is actually a fairly interesting list. Take a look over that, or else I can try to recommend some stuff if you have particular interests.

I heard good things about How To Solve it by Polya and How to Prove It. They are high level books, not real math textbooks.
I also heard good things about Spivak's Calculus.
I learned out of "A Transition to Advanced Mathematics"

The chart is dogshit because the entire thing just has you spinning in eddies of introductory remedial-level mathematics instead of useful math that leads to interesting applications. It's a waste of time.

If you want a good math curriculum, look at your state university's syllabus pages for all the core classes for a math major in sequence, and take the textbooks (plus supplemental texts if you're really a masochist) from each of them and just go through those.

All these charts were made by people who don't know what the fuck theyre talking about. People who shop amazon reviews for books instead of reading them. that goes for ALL THE CHARTS HERE not just this math one.

Hi anon, thanks for the detailed reply.
I guess, based on what you said, I was leaning more towards ethnographies.
I got the idea more from a book I read 'lost worlds of Africa' (mix between travel journal and anthropology) which studied these isolated tribes in North Africa as well as their history.
I guess I was more looking about similar books like this (if they're called 'ethnographies'), but I have no idea where I would find such books.
Thanks for any help.

Based on these you might start with Tristes Tropique by Claude Levi-Strauss. It is a similar mix of travelogue and anthropology which you might enjoy.

You might also like The Gift by Marcel Mauss, or Elementary Forms of Religious Life by Emile Durkheim.

These are all classic texts in social sciences, but also rather important for a wide range of anthropology. They're also all critiqued in anthropology for being rather dated with how they view "primitive" society. But they have interesting material and are worthwhile.

Maybe I should make an intro to anthropology chart.

I am of the opinion that rudin is too difficult and uninstructive. Why make it harder than it needs to be? It is pointless. I learned from Bartle and it was really clearly written.

Just read Taos analysis.

>> No.15353473

My point was that for that level of classes it doesn't matter.

Strang is fine as a first linear algebra course. Axler is fine too. Spivak is fine for calculus. All these are great, even.

Maybe Stewart calculus is inadequate because it is so expensive and needlessly big with a million exercises, it's not really something you can read through, at least how I remember it. I learned calculus out of Stewart and it was fine. You probably could too.

With math, only grasping the material matters, how you were presented to it doesn't matter at all.

This one has the same problem as the first. Do you realize D&F is 1000 pages long?

These are fairy tale make believe charts. How can you expect to make a chart if you don't know the material yourself? Omfg

Read Spivak, Axler, whatever intro to Diffeq text you want, Taos analysis sequence and the parts of D&F that you care about, and watch lecture videos on YouTube, try and do enough of the exercises that you understand what is going on. That will encompass the entire chart

if you guys want a guide to math by someone who knows wtf he is talking about look at "how to become a good theoretical physicist" by Gerard thooft. He put together what seems to me like a great list. The first part of the list is pure math. It basically encompasses the analysis side of undergraduate mathematics. I think he even recommends the same books I have in my previous paragraph.

But seriously take it from someone who knows what they're talking about not charts a C-grade high schooler made to posture with on anonymous image boards

>> No.15353678

>>15341392
Like the math chart I was also going off about it is totally uneven. If you were to read all of the books you would come away having seen a bunch of introductions over and over again, and at the same time sometimes having been exposed to super deep things with no equipment to interpret or care about it.

The fact that this chart in particular is so widely shared tells me that the people sharing these charts are not people who actually read the books on them. have you tried reading the books on it? I have. It is a crap progression.

Have you tried actually reading Edith Hamilton's book? It is a book designed for high school curricula. Its insight is asinine. Hesiods two poems (which are like 50 pages long) are a really dry cultural artifact that is useless to anyone who isn't actively studying that stuff. No one gives a fuck about any of these books other than the Iliad in the Odyssey. They certainly do not need these bullshit "prerequisites" like the chats suggest
