In the past few weeks I've seen several articles regarding how the corona will undoubtedly change everything (who will write the first post-pandemic novel etc.) but I've been sort of transfixed as to how the recent UFO disclosure may have a bigger impact on literary spheres particularly sci-fi. To clarify, New Sun's always relevant. As Joyce encompasses modern life, NS encompasses all of science fiction, and is one of the few sf-al works to do so. NS pretty much owns the science fantasy domain, which can be seen in its reaching far into world myth and obscura. To answer you and the Final Fantasy poster, yes, it's always relevant in these concerns.

NS is one of the inspirations for the general aesthetic of FF, of its combination of world mythologies, and overall intricate taste for beauty. In fact, Amano did the classic Japanese covers for NS, as posted in OP.

The only experience I've had reading aorund this area was finding out about how successful Blindsight was in translation, or equally how successful 3BP is in the English-speaking world. I always thought their scientific terminology (which naturally is fairly easily to translate as it's purely technical) and prioritisation of conceptual versus literal style would given them a leg-up in being translated effectively.

They literally bait-and-switched me saying it's a "fantasy writing class" broken up into sections that focus on analysis of Tolkien's worldbuilding, "soft fantasy" contemporary stuff, and then workshopping. Instead, they had us write one fantasy short, which was required to be "light on fantasy elements and set in modern times," and then literally analyze fucking poetry and personal essays with no mention of anything like Tolkien, PKD, etc. They did it to me and they'll do it to you because universities fucking hate speculative fiction and do not want to be associated with it.

The second one is more of a swarthy swashbuckling adventure type novel with lots of brooding and self pity on Locke's part. I believe the author was going through a divorce and basically wrote it in the depths of his despair.

With that said I enjoyed it for what it was and really think the third one is quite good too.

I've been particularly curious as of late about Tolkien's unfinished (and not far beyond unstarted) sequel to LOTR, and I really like the idea of it. That said, I think that if it was ever written, it would be a major let down, seeing as all of the shit everyone went through was for nothing.
But I'm curious. Mainly because I think it would be a cool story to write about. A story set in an almost Post-fantasy world where humanity is on full display, and begins to succumb to the beast that lives in us all seems ripe for good storytelling.
But please tell me /sffg/, do you think a New Shadow-esque story could be told in a vacuum? As in, there is no Lord of the Rings to set it up, and the supposed "Good old days" are never visible to the readers.

i just read the eisenhoron triology and i'm quite dissappointed. the plotholes are laughable and the story isn't very engaging, the action scenes are mostly masturbatory uninteresting fights. there are tons of boring useless descriptions that are just filler, or at least i don't care about it. i was hoping the MC would turn evil in the third book but he is still a one dimensional gary stu, as uninteresting as the rest of the characters which were all basically NPCs
